I have went back to Win 2000 from Xp and it's ripping me up inside.

My problem is that it would lock up frequently and restart randomly.

Is/was your install of XP like this and what have you done to correct this.

I need to find a software compatability list for XP.

I so want to go back but not if it keeps giving me fits.

I realize this isn't a lot of help but you either have a hardware problem or one or more bad drivers. Since you say the 2k is working fine, my guess is a bad driver. Did you have any that weren't certified (not that it always matters, but thats a good place to start)

It is either your sound or network card, also there might be a nvidia problem, does it give you any error codes? I have the same motherboard and had a gf2mx in it and got the nvidia something .dll error. Usually if it is the nvidia thing there will be an error code of some sort.
The nvidia error were from some of the detinator drivers btw.

Were there native drivers for your sound and network card in xp?

No he is not a "jerkwad". They should have thought about they're answers a little bit more and realized that this person you called a "jerkwad" was simply asking for help. In responce to their "solution" which was "no issues here" from CTho9305 and bob970, joy ride understandably got a little pterbed. Any ways, no issues here. Deffinately look into the nvidia driver situation though and try and remember wether the problem existed from the begining or after you did something. I say "no issues here" but the one big problem that I did have was with the latest driver from nvidia which caused frequent restarts any time the GPU would have to work a little bit. Problem was solved by reverting back to the prevous driver (easy enough). Is your bios up to date? I really need a little more info though to be of any real help. A list of your hardware would be good: Motherboard/chipset, video card, etc. etc.. Good luck and post that info.

Yea, I had to do the same thing on my laptop. Its a Dell Inspiron 8100, which has a very well known problem whithin the dell support arena concerning its Nvidia GeForce2 Go and windows XP. This is the infinite loop bug on steroids. Aparantly, theres some conflict with how XP does speedstep, causing a timing error, and many, many random BSOD's, sometimes they come too quickly to even attempt to install the various fixes that have been released for it (most of which don't work fully themselves). Nasty bug.

I don't think XP is particularly buggy for installations in general. I'd suggest using the

"check system compatibility" feature on the windowsXP CD. It did a pretty good job

of identifying potential difficulties for me prior to my install.

Secondly, when you install your XP, start with only the minimum hardware intstalled.

(Video Card, Floppy, CDROM). After the install completes, add your hardware and software

one piece at a time. test, add the next. This will allow you to have a clue where your

problems are comming from.

NOTE: It's kind of silly to sit back and just blame it all on XP when you have done so little
troubleshooting.

PS: I too fall in the "don't be a jerkwad" camp... YOU ASKED!

No it was nice clean simple install of WinXP with no problems,as for your problem well I agree with the other guys it`s best to have a minimum setup and install hardware one at a time that way you can track the problem down,I always recommend you do a clean install of WinXP.

I have only had one MAJOR problem so far and that has to do with scanning. With my Microtek 4800 scanner, I can scan fine, but as soon as I go to print, I can't scan anything else unless I reboot. I do have the latest drivers for both my printer and scanner, but they still don't work.

All my drivers were the ones installed during the setup so I would assume they were all signed by Microsoft.

I think I'll wait until there is a SP for XP and try it again.

Sorry about the Thanks for the help thing. I was getting my butt waxed in Final Fantasy IV and I was alittle angry.

Yeah, they are signed by Microsoft. But, they're very basic. You should make sure to download the most recent drivers for all of your components and install them right afterwards. Besides, there might've been some bugs since their release. Then, proceed to tweak everything.

Please check out my site, especially the page that links to other WinXP sites. I think it might help a little...

P.S. Sorry you got whupped in Final Fantasy.

I have no issues now. My only issue was a driver problem with my Iwill SideRAID 100 card. But the drivers from Iwill cleared that up (I had tried XP's native drivers, and Highpoint's drivers. Both caused problems).

Your thread question was, "Is your XP buggy?"

Bitching at people for answering that is stupid, and wont win you any friends here.

jpyride: did winxp have native drivers for the sound and network cards? Even if they did try updating to the latest drivers. I also recommend the xp upgrade compatiability thing on the cd.

Good luck with it.

I'm almost there, at about 10 days. Good luck Joyride. Just try to find updated drivers, and you should be good.
