Was the war immediately ended when Obama took office? No? Oh, I guess that magically makes someone else responsible for the actions of the US during the Obama administration. Must have been Bush. He's the one that greatly increased the number of troops in Afghanistan the first year Obama became president, then continued gradually increasing them for another two years or so. GD Bush and his iron fist ruling over the then current President.

ISIS used a VBIED laden with chlorine gas about 5 months ago. They tried taking out a Kurdish border position but fortunately it was spotted and the Kurds took it out from a safe distance with a recoilless rifle or an ATGM.

Sadly I suspect you are correct about Turkey. I see no way to stop their march into a fundamentalist Islamic state and no good coming of them being a NATO member, yet also no good in moving them into Putin's camp.

About 100 years ago the ottoman empire fell leading to a huge power struggle in the ME. A region which had been relatively calm compared to the wars happening in other counties.

Usually in such a vacuum a civil war decides who comes out on top. Much like a natural fire weeds out the weak and makes space for new growth.

The problem is like artificial back burning we have tried to control this civil war and have staunched it by propping up weak governments which support our economic agendas.

Now the fire is coming and their is a lot of dry trees ready to burn. There no controlling it now and if we get in the way we will be burnt (some would say we have already been burnt)

A war has to happen and a winner needs to rise. I can't see a diplomatic solution, that time has passed.

A space the size of the ME needs a super power to maintain stability. There has always been one in the area and there wont be peace until the next super power is formed.

I just hope its not IS.
