Isn't 10MBytes per minute a bit slow for a 10MBiT LAN?

If I'm not mistaken the theoretical speed for 10MBiT is 1MByte per second, however I just finished transfering a 73MB file after 7 minutes and 40 seconds. The computers are directly linked (NIC to NIC) using an RJ45 100MBiT capable cable. They are both running Win2K with the latest drivers and both cards are set to Full Dublex. As a matter of fact one of the cards is a 100/10MBiT card. Anyone have any ideas?

This is a bit too slow. In normal conditions it should take about 3 minutes instead. A 10Mbit network usually provides a throughput about 3-5Mbit. That translates to 400-600kbyte/sec transfer speed. You can go to www.speedguid.net for turnup instructions.

Cz is correct - You will get about 400KB/s on a 10Mb/s Ethernet connection.

You say that you have your two NIC's both setup for full duplex. Full Duplex 10Mb/s NIC's are extremely rare and really were only used for a couple of years back in the mid 90's before 100Mb/s became affordable.

Chances are your 10Mb/s NIC is really running at half duplex. If your 100Mb/s NIC is running at full duplex trying to talk to the half duplex NIC bad things can happen including horrid performance, as the FD NIC sees every collision (which are normal in HD Ethernet) as an error, since, by definition, FD networks can't have collisions.

In short.. Set both your NIC's down to 10/half and you should see better performance. Better yet, get a 100Mb/s NIC for your second machine if you do this a lot - $10 well spent at your local clone shop.

There are quite a few issues that can contribute to your slow transfer, many of which have been discussed in-depth on this forum by Spidey07, ScottMac, JackMDS, Damaged, and maybe some others including myself in a few cases.

A search for "slow transfer" yielded this thread which is similar to yours.

A search for "transfer rate" brought up a lot of good threads as well. Maybe you can figure it out yourself.

Garion if I go to device manager and then double click on my NIC, under Advanced I have the following options:

Duplex Mode: Full Duplex, Half Duplex (default)
Line Speed: TP Full Duplex, TP Half Duplex, 10Base5, 10Base2

I have the latest drivers installed, but I seem to remember something about them being generic drivers or something like that. What you are saying is to set both to Half Duplex and benchmark it again, right?

Exactly. Make sure both cards are set to 10Mb/s Half Duplex - TP Half Duplex. (TP = Twisted Pair = Cat5 cable). If both agree on the duplex, things will probably be right.
