According to benchmarks sites and apps I'm getting 360/14.

According to real world use I'm not getting anything like that.

Possible explanations?

On a more serious note, "last mile" piping, while great for speedtest sites that are hosted on or near your ISP's servers, as "preferred" speedtest servers, has very little to do with actual internet-wide transit bandwidth. Welcome to internet reality, post COVID-19. Get used to it.

IOW, what good does a highway on-ramp with a 60MPH speed limit (!) do, if the highway itself is stuck in Rush Hour traffic. (A nice little mis-nomer there.)

Try using dslreports.com/speedtest. I find this to be the most realistic across all 4 isp accounts I work with.

First, you are paying for ACCESS. Second, you are given a promise of UP TO. But it is up to you to decide of the promised UP TO speed being OFFERED in ACCESS to you ISP's network--and not the Internet--is worth it. Anything beyond your ISP's network is out of their control, and yours.

Haven said that the nature of your exact installation, both inside your home and on the local loop, can speak loudly of what is capable and what is trouble.

Just because you have x mbps pipe doesn't mean the server you are accessing will saturate your pipe.

Often yes, but good old fashion unscrupulous operating practices effect things on peering. For instance, calls across my ISP to Google DNS will usually take the slow boat to China in an effort to keep ISP customers using native DNS instead. I've often noted how much quicker websites like Google load when on a VPN compared to without it on AT&T's network using a Gigabit connection.

that is true. My comment was related to those intermittent DNS problems at the local level. It never seems to pay to go around them to root servers like in the very old days.
