ispropyl 70%?

someone reccomended i use 99% isopropyl to clean my cpu

i just found 70% in my closet...will this do or should i buy 99%

Get something between 91-99%. The 70% stuff is more likely to contain skin conditioners and other crap you don't need for cleaning your cpu and HSF.

70% isn't very good quality for isopropyl, to be honest.

In fact, I had some absinthe at the weekend that was stronger than that (74% awwwrite). Get some rubbing alcohol from the chemist, you can get 90% easily in the medical supplies section.

I use 70%. The 99% stuff they sell here is called Isopropanol which is essentially the same stuff if you know your chemistry nomenclature.

70% is fine if its straight alcohol and water. Make sure there is nothing else in it. If there isn't your good to go, just give it a little more time to dry.

The stuff with skin conditioners and other crap are more likely to say they have skin conditioners and other crap in them.


I get what ever they have at the store. I read the label to see what is in the bottle. Every time, for me, it says ispropyl and H20.

any particular motion to wipe the cpu?as in horizantal and so on


also after i wipe it clean, how long would you say it takes to dry...also what is a good surface to put the cpu on to clean it

91-99% is good. You can go to your local pharamacy. Its very inexpensive - 3$ or so per bottle.

It takes about 15-20 seconds to dry, when using 70%. And the best surface by far to put the cpu on is the motherboard, with the pins in their respective holes, and the lever lowered, to hold the cpu down. BTW, the only real difference between 70% and 90%, besides how quickly they dry, is how hard you need to rub. I accidentally used 50% one time; it worked just fine, but I kept wondering "why am I having to rub so hard?"

i have used 70% before it gets the job done. as to how hard you have to rub well that depends on the compound. speaking of which your new thermal compound should be artic silver 5. what i recommend since you are taking off the old thermal grease is too get some wet sandpaper and lap your chip. very tired right now but if you don't know what lapping is ( not lap dancing) google it, you'll find your answer to that very quickly, or start a new thread and people will answer real fast. i would do that right now but i'm beat.

well Artic silver sells it and you bought it use it and tell us how it went, very intrested in how good this stuff is. Hurry up and use it, im very curious, but i will stick to the $2 bottle of 91% regardless.

I've used it, and it works, but I still use alcohol.
