Israel has never tried to defeat/destroy the Palestinians in Gaza or the West Bank.
Strikes against those areas have been with limited precision. The UN has always been begged by the Palestinians whenever Israel has knocked on their door.
Had Israel wanted to defeat the Palestinians; they could have brought their military might in to remove any militants, munitions and logistics. They have chosen not to. Each time the Palestinians have stated that they will no longer attack Israel, they will abide by peace treaties. Every time they then start up attacks on Israel.
Truces do not last more than days. Then the Palestinians find a way to attack Israel and point the finger with excuses.
Initially Israel sits back and takes it. As the attacks grow more frequent, bolder and powerful; eventually Israel responds. Then the Palestinians complain about disproportional force.
so it is ego alone that makes people believe that the Palestinians defeat the Israelis. Had that been the truth; the Palestinians would swarm over the borders immediately (cannon fodder) backed by the Arabs
