I have no idea what the number of casualties is. What I do know is that Hamas is an incredibly untrustworthy source and I'm sure you know this as well.If you think it is an underestimate of the total casualties then I entirely agree with you. The fact of the matter is that Gaza consists of several densely-populated cities that have been carpet-bombed for nearly a year and civilians have been told to evacuate and then bombed in the evac sites.
Pick a city, then carpet-bomb it for a year, and while you're at it, try and kill any fleeing civilians. 40k casualties seems like a low-ball figure to me. Why does it seem like an exaggeration to you?
