Always funny how there are these billion page super passionate threads for Israel/Palestine, while a stones throw away Saudi Arabia and The US are doing basically the same thing to Yemen, where some estimates show 85,000 children have starved to death as a result of Saudi Airstrikes and a US naval blockade and whatchuget are crickets.

is anyone defending the saudis?

-Sort of ignoring the whole Yemen thing is, IMO, worse than either supporting or criticizing.

Forgotten wars are far and away the most tragic.

To ignore something is a wilful act. I can't remember the last time I read anything to do with Yemen, it does not mean I am *ignoring* it.

Your argument sounds like when someone walks into a discussion on a particular topic and says, "why are you arguing about this when there are so many other things to argue about?". Of course there are and always shall be.

-You've almost got my argument, just misconstrued a little bit:

why are you arguing about this so passionately when there are so many other things to argue about?".

This level of engagement and vitriol seems specifically reserved for Israel and Palestine.

Why would be a good question and I suspect a complete answer would be a very complicated one, but I think it starts with the same reason why other topics like Yemen aren't being discussed so much: Israel/Palestine likely gets a lot more attention in the news. After that, I've commented on this thread previously about how many people feel obligated to 'choose a side' and it's a very morally messy issue including Holocaust emotional baggage.

-I would further posit that "The Jews" add an extra layer of spiciness on top. "Marketing the Holocaust" was a huge cultural W for Israel but it's also become their biggest albatross during their military excursions into Gaza.

People sort of expect "The Jews" of all people to be deeply sensitive to any kind of systemic oppression and when Israel's behavior doesn't match the "Never Again" sloganeering it drives folks into a bit of a frenzy.

I think corpo news, being a business and all, both follows and drives public sentiment and creates a bit of a feedback loop.

Oooh nice mental gymnastics there, arguing that we jettison definitions when no definition gives you the conclusion you desire. So hey, let's just make up our own Israel specific definitions!

It's not a stone's throw away from anything. The population of Gaza City, where the vast majority of these deaths are taking place, has been mostly evacuated after having been given now 6 warnings to do so, and is now being given another 4 hour pause to GTFO. What remains isn't likely more than 1% of the existing Palestinian population, and a huge chunk of them are combatants. And there's no evidence Israel is purposefully targeting civilians.

Was the United States purposely targeting civilians with all the drone strikes we did in Afghanistan and Pakistan? I think civi casualties for those alone are 15,000+ but that is IIRC. So it's an atrocity or a "stone's throw from genocide" when it's Israel, but not when it's another country, eh? Sorry, but I have to keep pointing out these double standards like a broken record, because the double standard itself is a broken record. Maybe the lightbulb will go on for one of you guys some time, that you are condemning Israel for doing things other nations are doing, calling it "genocide" when Israel does it but not when the US does it. Then really think about why you're doing it.

Tell me now, what ought Israel to do right now? You clearly don't want them attacking the terrorists who murdered 1400 of their citizens, so what alternative course of action would you suggest?
I think you're the one doing mental gymnastics. The response to allegations of genocide is showing proof that
1) you're taking clear steps to avoid civilian deaths
2) you're allowing and or providing humanitarian aid
3) you're able to show justification that certain civilian deaths were necessary and unavoidable

In the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, the US was generally able to do those three things. Israel currently refuses to do any of these. Even simple things like don't hit UN sites (67 UN aid workers have been killed so far) they can't seem to do.

Like I said if your response to genocide allegations is "define genocide" and not those three things above, you're probably not too far from it.

a quote from Twitter:

"100 Israeli doctors sign a petition calling for the destruction of all hospitals in Gaza. Lovely people with great colleagiate attitude. They must have taken the same Hippocratic oath as Harold Shipman."

"Another heavy night of bombing in Gaza
There have been more heavy air strikes and explosions in northern Gaza overnight.
Phone and internet services in the Strip are reported to be down - but last night we managed to hear from our journalist in Gaza, Rushdi Abualouf, who told us he thought it had been most intense wave of air strikes since the beginning of the war.
He said the strikes were focused on north-west Gaza, with the Beach refugee camp - also known as the Shati camp - bombed heavily.
And just in the past hour, Israel has said its fighter jets have attacked 450 targets in the territory in the last day."

Imagine being so utterly detached from your moral compass to bomb a refugee camp and to carry on thinking that you're even vaguely in the right.

Israel's Heritage minister called for the nuking of Gaza:

Later in the article:

"Eliyahu also voiced objection to allowing any humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying, “we wouldn’t hand the Nazis humanitarian aid,” and charging that “there is no such thing as uninvolved civilians in Gaza.”"

"“They can go to Ireland or deserts; the monsters in Gaza should find a solution by themselves.”"

"Amid the growing outrage, the Prime Minister’s Office announced that Eliyahu was suspended from cabinet meetings indefinitely. It was unclear if he would still be able to participate in phone votes.

Government ministers told the Ynet news site that the suspension was meaningless.

“This is a joke, there barely are any cabinet meetings anyway, and most of the work is being done in rounds of votes by phone,” an unnamed minister was quoted as saying.

Netanyahu initially sought to fire Eliyahu, but backpedaled after Ben Gvir said he would not go along with the move, Channel 12 news reported."

Eliyahu is a joke, as are 90% of the so-called ministers. There are 33 ministers in the government of Israel (not including six more that were added in the "emergency government") and most of them are jokes.

Having said that, Netanyahu is a total coward and failure. The law gives him all of the power to fire Eliyahu, but the only thing that he can think about is his political future and court troubles.

Shouldn't put a terrorist organization inside your building if you don't want to be treated like a military target.

At least that s usefull for the israelis, they know who are the "doctors" to avoid at any cost...

On another subject the israeli paper Haaretz just updated their statistics of israeli death toll at 554 civilians with no baby in the list although there s children.

Since the official toll is 1400 it means that there s 846 non civilian casualties, Haaretz has counted about 60 policemen, so the rest is close to 800 militaries, there s was indeed rumours two weeks ago that there was at least 600 israeli militaries killed, that put the civilian death toll at 40%, to compare with at least 95% civilians killed in the palestinian death toll.

Love these people.

Seeing Hasidic Jews fighting against Zionism is a breath of fresh air. I always thought this group were Zionists.
This is coming from someone that is agnostic.

Being allies with an apartheid state creating government like Israel, and now a genocidal one, has been horrible for American foreign policy, and supporting that evil so unwaveringly and looking so blind has cost America so much, from trustworthiness, from the total hypocrisy of it, it's been terrible for America and Americans. Not saying to cut Israel off, but this unwavering backing of Israel now, and over the years, has not only been just wrong and immoral, it's hurt America and Americans - it's time to get more real in regards to the Israeli matter is what it is time for.

Have to unfollow this thread, was gonna reply to a person, but with all of the Twit/X links, and flat out propaganda wars being waged.
I am seeing things here, that just do not coincide with what these same people "usually post" so there is either some sort of existential media blast going on, or inherent bias IDK. It's like our 9/11, "oh well, we were bad and created bin laden"

It's weird how many avenues people are going down on this one. I'm out.

PLS don't quote me.

Am no expert but I thought there was at least one strand of "ultra orthodox" Jews who were anti-Zionist for religious reasons - becuase they believe it to be blasphemous to establish Israel 'prematurely', i.e. before the return of the Messiah?

Well not only is Israel an apartheid state and now committing genocide, besides the thousands and thousands of Palestinian civilians they've killed over the years, and dozens and dozens of journalists, Now they're setting records for killing UN aid workers. What a fucked up country. I feel sad for the intelligent and sane and moral Israelis that have to live with this kind of government.
