Nope. The only reason they've gone this path is that US decision makers are in the grips of a monstrously powerful lobby that can make or break anyone in the US political system. If not for that, Israel would have been declared a pariah state long ago.
and tell me, just how was the UN going to make Hamas comply with the resolution and release the hostages?

Once again I am shamed by my nation's subservience to Israel. I very much disagree with the veto. Call for a cease fire? Send aid? Both.

IDF could wage a counter insurgency campaign like we did in Iraq; you didn't see us wiping out civilians in Ramadi, or trying to snuff the rest of them with cholera and no water. What right wing Jewish settlers in the West Bank are doing (with army protection) is disgusting too, basically legal murder and seizure to enlarge settlements illegal under international and Israeli law. Hamas must end but this is not the way, it's ensuring quite the opposite in fact. Flyers and safe zones that don't exist aren't winning Israel any new supporters I'm pretty sure. The sympathy they got over the savagery of Hamas is being pissed away.

Glad to hear Netanyahu's removal has begun at least.

I haven't been following this very closely, but are universities actually having mass anti-jewish protests or is actually anti-Israel genocidal behavior?

I really don't understand why we let Israel be the only country in the world we aren't allowed to criticize. I can criticize the Chinese government without being called anti-asain, I can criticize the South Africa government without being called anti-black, but if I say Israel should kill random Palestinians and take their land, I'm called antisemitic.

They sure are trying to stifle free speech, hell they even passed a motion in congress calling anti-zionism=anti-antisemitism which is preposterous

Yeah, I read the NYT article this morning, which prompted the question. I see a whole lot of right wing hand wringing over "what's happening on campuses" but I've see no real specifics of people calling for the genocide of Jews. So this seems like another right wing made up talking point, that democrats are falling all over themselves to help with.

ETA: I'm guessing these republican congressmen would feel much different about people for anti-black speech. There would be a whole shit ton of rednecks kicked out of college for that. The presidents probably should've just given a simple answer and submitted an amendment later with the caveats on it.

Don't know the specifics, but it feels like chanting "From the river to the sea" is considered automatic anti-semitism by those who wish to brand that so and b) in any movement, on any side, in fraught times, there are ALWAYS a few complete assholes. And these days, there's always video of intemperate assholes (usually young) spouting intemperate hate rhetoric, thereby making their side of the conflict look really bad.

During the war in 'Nam we who tried to march peacefully and purposefully always had to deal with the "break store windows and burn it all down" nihilistic assholes, who made the rest of us look bad.

Hamas should just surrender. If they cared at all they would surrender.

Lets say Hamas wins. This outcome is extremely probable, twenty years from now. What happens then?

Nobody is going to let themselves be associated with Hamas. Egypt is never opening the border again. There will never be money to rebuild Gaza. Its Afghanistan. Not enough to keep people alive, just a bit now and then when the international press remembers Gaza exists. No way to escape. The world press will have moved on long ago. The PLA will have been cursed by association, its refusal to condemn the horror.

Hamas should just surrender, let Israel have the hostages, their leaders, and those involved in the attack. Accept responsibility and disband what remains.

Israel knows it cannot win, but it also cannot walk away. Hamas has leverage, it should negotiate its surrender if it cares at all for the Palestinian people. All Hamas has to offer is a decade of war, death, starvation, and poverty.

Agree, but also it would be very easy for pro-israeli infiltrators to cover their face with a keffiyeh and shout death to the Jews while one of their friends films it. Not saying its been done, just that its so easy to do and would not be surprised if it occurred. Because they can do so much with that as we can already see with the fired college presidents.

Hamas is doing what it cares about it has no interest in surrendering.

Anyone who says "From the river to the sea" is a genocidal racist, no different from Hamas or Likud.

The only way for tolerance to exist is to not tolerate intolerance of tolerance. Contradiction that may be.

Way to miss the forest for the trees about the fit over that hearing.
