I think the turning point was the mass spread of the internet in the 90s and Israel's "new historians" (Ilan Pappe, Avi Shlaim, Tom Segev, etc) who begun to debunk Israelis lies and myths about the 1948 war. Much of their work was based on Israeli historical archives that ran counter to the official narrative.
