Issue with File Permissions - Samba + Webmin on Ubuntu 10.04

Disclaimer, I'm a total linux newb so I have no idea how to edit the file permissions in Samba inherently, so I'm using the latest Webmin version on Ubuntu 10.04 Server edition.

Basically, I'm having issues with files and directory inheriting the file permissions of the parents directory.

I've done everything listed here: http://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/SambaWindowsFileSharing

but that doesn't say anything about files and folders inheriting permissions from the parent directory.

When I connect to the network drive as a guest, or anyone (home network, no password needed, everyone only gets read access) they can SEE the 1st level of folders listed in the one parent share folder, but they can't go any deeper.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

If I understand your question correctly...

I'm lazy! I just use Nautilus (or whatever file manager is available) to 'inherit' the permissions.

With Nautilus, all you have to do is right-click the folder, check the "Properties", make sure the (folder) "Permissions" are correct, then click the "Apply Permissions to Enclosed Files" button.

Here's a screenie...

You may, or may not, have to do the same to subdirectories contained inside the folder.

So, if you have folders inside of folders, check their permissions too, just to be sure...

Nice, I have nautilus installed but never thought to use that function.

So whenever you add new files or folders to the parent directory, you have to do these steps in Nautilus all over again?

You shouldn't have to do it again, unless you're installing/creating folders/files using a command line.

Sometimes the command, in whatever program you're using, will default to making the folder/file only readable by the owner or group, depending on the command line switches that you use, or don't use.

Anyway, I don't want to confuse you... LoL!

AFAIK, you should be good to go, as long as you're not doing stuff from CLI.

New files/directories shouldn't inherit anything unless you have the sticky bit on a directory. The permissions applied will be 777 minus whatever the umask is set to. Samba itself has options to affect the umask and to straight up force permissions, ownership, etc so those are probably what you want to look into.

I believe I've fixed the issue.

I had to grant full permissions to the user named "sambashare" which, to my limited understanding, was created by Samba to manage the permissions on all the files it needs access to.

I'm assuming that now if I change anything from within Samba in Webmin, it will then use the sambashare user account to act the changes upon the files/folders.

Please correct me if I'm wrong! Hopefully this info will help others w/ the same issue.
