i built my computer 3 weeks ago and here are the specs:

A8N-SLi deluxe
AMD64 3500+
corsair 2x512 RAM
WD 200 gig HD
aspire x-infinity
aspire 520 psu

Well last friday i ordered a new hard drive, the WD raptor from newegg and recieved it 2 days ago. My friend and I tried to install that HD with the 200 gig one. I connected the SATA cable into the mobo and the psu cable. It didnt show up after trying the "add new hardware" in the control panel. So i went one the anandtech forums and it told me to go to the disk management tool and i was able to reformat the HD and get it to show up on my computer.
But I wanted windows to run off of the raptor so i went and reformat it for windows and when i tried it there was an error when i tried to boot up. "error loading OS" I thought maybe it was the HD but my friend took it home and the same thing happened to him. Any solutions? Ill write an RMA if it is a defective HD...

When you installed windows to the raptor, was the other hard drive stil attached? If so thats the problem, you don't want to have any other hard drives present when installing to a SATA hard drive, as it leads to problems exactly like yours. Try disconnecting the other drive, formating the raptor, and installing windows. Do not connect the other hard drive, until windows is completely installed, and you can succesfuly boot to the OS. Then put the other drive back in.

I'm a little curious, is the raptor the primary drive / partition and is considered active? It wasn?t an extended partition when you tried to install the os? Most likely the MBR hasn?t been written properly to the raptor for the OS.

As the others have stated above; disconnect all other hd?s, ensure you have your sata drivers on hand, boot off the cd, ensure you re-wipe the partition table and create a new?. Then install again.

If you don?t want to go through the process of re-installing the OS, remove all other hd?s, boot off of the cd and re-write the MBR of the raptor. Then again you have to think, why go through the hard way (for some it can be) when you can start from scratch once more?

Also? did you try to ghost or a fresh install?

I'm having the same problem and a fresh install did not fix the problem. I've also cleared the CMOS, changed plug n play to no in bios and also played around with the HD settings in the bios to no avail.

It's really weird how it works perfectly fine as a non-boot drive but even after installing a fresh copy of windows, it won't boot-up. Any other ideas?
