Issue with USB hard disk

Hey guys

I got another external hard disk (based on a 100GB 2.5" hard disk), and am experiencing the problem where if I leave the drive plugged into my PC when shutting down, the next time I boot up it shows as an Uknown Device in the Device Manager.

The only way to fix it is to unplug and reconnect the device. Seems simple enough to fix, but if I have to do that all that time, I'm going to wear out the connectors!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Does the 2.5 external case have a small pin connector for added power? If so, there are connector cables that allow you to connect to a second USB port. Sometimes a single port just doesn't provide enough power even for a 2.5" HDD.

3.5 externals always require separate ppower sources.

Hot plugging will focus the computer's power distribution to USB on that port, whereas it may get lost in an "average" distribution of power if left in during the boot cycle.

Alternatively, instead of connecting it to a system USB port, connect to a powered hub.

Hi there.

Yup, the enclosure does have a place for a 5V DC connection... the unit actually came with 2 USB cables (one for power, one for data). I have both plugged in at all times though.

I'll get myself a 5V adapter then

Smart choice. Thne you can shut it down when you are not using it and you can boot up with out a hitch.

Good call - that's what I do with my small externals - even Firewire. They simply work more reliably.

Hey guys

As per the advice given here, I went and got myself a 7-port powered USB hub (it's a CNet UB27).

However, even when I have nothing plugged into the hub, in the Device Manager my PC keeps finding and losing a 'Generic USB hub' (2 installed originally, when I plugged the hub in).
I take it the hub is faulty?

Did you also use the A/C adapter as indicated previously? I know nothing about CNET hubs - I always use Belkin, Firewire and USB. Never a problem. And, the external case can also be the problem.

Yup, the hub came with an AC adapter, which is connected.

I have tried emailing CNet themselves, but I'm still waiting for answer. If they don't come back to me within a day or 2, I'd might as well just RMA the hub and be done with it.

As for the external casing, it's an iRocks IR9200 (all my hardware supplier had at the time, when I went to collect the 100 GB HDD).

OK - try one of those extra USB to power pin cables from the hub. It's worth a shot.
