DUDE, I GOT A DELL! Just got my 8600 last thurs, and I love this thing. I got in on that deal with the 500$ off w/ 200 MIR. It's my first laptop. Love the widescreen, long battery life, and nice wireless range. If i'm not doing much on it, the battery icon tells me i'll have like 5.5hrs left on a full charge, sweet.

Inspirion i8600c: P-M 1.6 dothan, WXGA, 256mb sodimm (ordered 256 more), Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo, 40gb hd, Dell Wireless 1350

Here are some issues i'm having...

1. Static/beeping sounds
When moving windows around like maximizing, scrolling, etc... I get slight beeping/static sounds coming out of my speakers. It also happens sometimes when i'm not doing anything too. I'm not sure what it is, but I have had similar problems on my desktop before, but I fixed that by muting the input line. I've tried re-installing the Sigmatel drivers off the Dell site, but that made no difference.

2. Resolution
Apparantly the resolution on the Welcome Screen, and Log On are not the same as my main desktop res. So when I come out of standby, and put my pw in, Windows has to re-adjust the resolution thus causing icons, and windows on my desktop to be moved, re-sized, or out of place of where they were before. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

3. Laptop temps
I installed the handy FanGUI program. I was wondering what are the safe, and typical temps of an 8600 for things such as the CPU, GPU, DIMM, and HD.

sorry cw42 no answers for you but I do have a question:

how is your keyboardh

I have the similar latitude D800 for work and I would consider getting one for home, but the keyboard is abismal.

The left hand side of the keyboard flexes horibily. it actualy sounds different from the right side when typing on it and just feels really bad. I make noticieably more mistakes typing on this thing than i have on any other keyboard in my life.

Does the inspiron 8600 have the same horible keyboard or is it better????

Thanks!!!!

I have no problems with keyboard, or touchpad flexing. Everything feels fine, and solid. I have heard of other people having problems, but mine has been perfectly fine. The only thing I wish with the keyboard is that the delete key was down by the arrows so it's easier to reach.

zodder, cw42.

Thank you very much for the input. I am considering that $750 off $1500 tomorow and the 8600 would be my top contender (9100 is just way to big).

This might be stupid but did you turn your window setting to no sound? sometimes it is that simple.

trikster2, not that i want to argue with you but i'd like to add that an i8600 is slightly bigger in depth and length, but about 2 cm or less shorter than i9100, and of course lighter. If you mean big = heavy then yes 9100 is big.

cheers.

No

I mean big as in big.

TWO INCHES THICK

thats not a laptop that's a brick.

8600 is "only" 1.5" thich. Add to that the back breaking 10+ lb travel weight and I decided to pass.

If I am going to have that weight and battery life, I might as well weight for the Inspiron 9200 with the 17" screen due next month.

cw42 ... my best guess is that the static is most probably from your video card. Its a known problem, check notebookforums.com or dell forums for it. The video card has to be changed.
