Issues with slow download speeds

I am having issues that seem to be Verizon throttling to me, but I just want to check to see if it is a wiring issue or something else I can fix. I have 50/50 FIOS internet, speedtest.verizon.net shows 60MBPS when I'm not doing anything. I have a few examples where I download something while running verizon speedtest which I think shows throttling versus not throttled. I have run all of these multiple times and back to back so this is not a time of day issue.

• Nvidia driver download, 7MBPS, verizon speedtest shows 3MBPS - throttled
• steam download, 7MBPS, verizon speedtest shows 3MBPS - throttled
• GOG download, 3MBPS, verizon speedtest shows 40MBPS - not-throttled (GOG just slow)
• Youtube 1080p streaming, verizon speedtest shows 50MBPS - not-throttled

The Verizon interface was installed earlier this year. The cable goes into a 8-way splitter which leads to (1) cable box, (2) modem, and the rest are currently dead-ends/not used. The modem is a FIOS-G1100. I talked to verizon for a while and that was a dead-end but they are sending a technician over.

Get rid of that splitter. It's not doing you any favors.

Seriously. Lose the splitter. I'm a cable installer and the rule is where the cable enters the house, it hits a two way splitter 1st, one lead to the modem, the other to another splitter to handle all the TVs. There is no reason to have open dead ends. Every split cuts the signal in half.
You can also expore having FIOS come and install the modem via Ethernet to the Box on the side of your house.

Well I got rid of the 8-way splitter and put in a 2-way splitter. My download with Steam is still exactly 7.3MBPS, it never varies. When I am performing the Verizon speedtest without steam I get 64MBPS, as soon as I turn on steam download for 7.3MBPS the Verizon speedtest plummits to 4 MBPS. Keep in mind I am connecting to the exact same Verizon server during this change from 64MBPS to 4MBPS and then back to 64MBPS when I turn off steam. How could this be anything but throttling?

When the Verizon tech gets here tomorrow I will directly connect my modem to the garage Verizon box so he can't blame any of the wiring in my house.

Are you expecting to be able to pull down from steam or any other site at 50mb/s? You say your download is at 7.3, and internet plans are sold in megabit's per second and not megabytes per second, just trying to keep you from getting hit with a no trouble found result when the verizon tech clears his ticket after running a speedtest. I work for an ISP and this is something I see a few times a month. When they don't find a problem, they will usually hit you with a callout fee.

Based on what you put in the post above this 7.3 * 8 = 58.4. The remaining loss from there could be from packet overhead.

Yeappp, dumb post by me, I knew that once upon a time but hardly ever download big files and I just forgot. Thanks for smacking some reason into me. I will say I had the Verizon tech sharing my screen while I was downloading stuff and he was watching the 7.3 Megabyte per second speed and was blaming that on the servers I was downloading from rather than just saying that's equivalent of ~60megabit per second as you pointed out.

Happens to everyone, you should cancel that callout so they don't bill you for it if possible. Alot of places overprovision speeds to counteract that packet overhead.
