Indeed. This can't be stressed enough. It's like saying you work in healthcare. Are you an orderly? A neurosurgeon? A c-suite exec? All can work in healthcare.

Do 2nd level help desk people really make $60K a year now? That seems super high to me.

The ones I know ranged around 40s to 60s, with senior level people dipping into the 80s.

Don't worry so much about average salaries. Find an in-demand IT niche and you can charge whatever you want. I recommend a specialty in Business Intelligence/Analytics, Security, or ERP if you really want to maximize your income.

$20/hr to start for bottom-tier helpdesk is pretty good, actually.

A+ certification is basically a computer salesperson's cert.

Typically you get into a consulting job after school and work your way up. Otherwise you have to get lucky with projects or experience.

Yeah, those numbers seem a tad high, but if there is a 21k disparity you are definitely being underpaid. For my particular field I'm just over the bottom of the range, but I only have like 3 years experience.

That's about what I thought I was making, until 65 hour weeks started. Ended up trading down to a blue collar skill position that only has a HS diploma req within the company.

OP, I don't mean to scare you but if I had the choice now, I'm not sure I would pick IT again. Maybe there are jobs out there that make you feel like you picked the right field with IT but once you add student loans to the equation...

I'm hourly so they don't want to pay me OT so I have to leave at the end of my shift.

But yes, I hate IT. Trying to get out of it soon before it's too late.

I was going to say, enjoy it while you can, but then I saw your next post about hating it.

That was a bit less than what I was making at an old job. It wasn't IT, but I had an opportunity to transfer into the IT department as a sort of intern... My job sucked so bad that I could wait until I could made the switch and left the company.
