I was following an old Mini Cooper on my way in to work this morning, the original British one, not the BMW one produced currently, and I could smell the exhaust from it from inside my car while following 30' behind it.

No way a car could belch out that much pollution under todays emissions laws thankfully.

i remember when i was a kid, big commercial vehicles were exempt from pollution laws. 18 wheelers, cement trucks, etc. would leave black clouds so thick you could walk on it. "waahhhh...we can't afford to not pollute like a mofo."

I love the smell of a properly tuned performance car without cats. Sweet crisp smell of high octane fuel after a WOT pull, not that muggy nasty smog smell of a oil burning beater that hasn't had a tune up in 25 years

Yes the cars are very clean now, but they still stink with something. I think auto manufacturers add something in cats to make the smell unattractive.

I've got a 43 year old car, and I love the way it smells. Step on the gas and it really opens her up. Drive with the window down when I can. And I don't have to follow emissions laws, because it's a classic. Get to do whatever I want to do, which is fantastic.

That smell is sulfur impurities in the fuel being stored in the cats and subsequently released during various stages of operation. Its an unwanted impurity in gasoline that is just along for the ride and has nothing to do with combustion, engines, or emissions control.
