I can't seem to get this computer to shut down without using the power button. I can find nothing in the bios to change that will effect it. I also updated to the latest bios. The computer runs fine, and it's not hanging up, it's just making me use the power button just like an old Windows 95 machine. I'm using XP Pro, but it does the same thing with 98SE. Don't know why it would matter, but I have installed an old Pentium 4 1.8 x 400 processor. Is there a windows setting for this? I hate simple problems...

It sounds like you don't have an ACPI compliant bios, or have ACPI disabled.

Try going into Control Panel - Power Options, and see if there's a tab which says APM.

If its there click on it and tick the box which says 'Enable Advanced Power Management'

That should solve the problem.

The board has an ACPI setting which I have set to enable, but it still asks to be turned off. Polite, but not exactly the thing I want it to do. Ugh...

So you don't have that APM tab in Power Options? Hmmmm

Was ACPI enabled when you first installed the OS?

If it wasn't it would have used the APM Hal, which would be why your getting the problems you have now.
In which case you'd have to reinstall the OS (or at least do a repair) to get the correct Hal installed.

Have a look in Device Manager - Computer, and see if it says its an ACPI PC there.
