Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work towards raising awareness about global warming

Will this be enough to push Al Gore into the 2008 Presidential Elections? If so, how much of an effect will he have on them?

The Nobel committee cited them "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."

While I think the Peace prize isn't appropriate, he has been a good salesman for his beliefs and those of his followers but does it translate into anything tangible for him politically?

He's not going to run because he can't beat the Hillary machine. Unless he wants to be VP, I suppose.

Btw, I find it mildly amusing that those on here that are so critical of Gore can't see their ass from a hole in the ground, and now the hole in the ground is a Nobel Peach Prize. Never did understand how global warming, a fact, and man-made global warning, another fact, could become a partisan issue to some. That's so 1980's.

A strange choice for the peace price, that's for sure.
Then again, they did hand it to Arafat once.

This ought to piss off the usual suspects when they wake up and see this. ;D

Fred Thomson. Al Gore. I think the reason people are looking to these "other" choices is that the whole election process started way way way too early and had too much attention. How many debates have we had so far??? How much news coverage???

Way too early. many are burnt out already. And attention span is not able to function.

By the time Summer of 2008 rolls around, we'll be looking at Pee Wee Herman and some guy from American Idol as alternatives.

BTW, congrads Al!!! U the man!

Well, at least the choices would be improving.

I fail to see how his 'work' earned him a NPP. He makes a movie filled with inaccuracies, flies around in private jets, has a house that consumes 20 times the energy of an average home, makes a gazillion dollars selling guilt-free carbon credits to those who can afford them to make them feel better about their overly consumptive lifestyles... And he gets the NPP? For his work on the environment?

And even if his work was true, accurate and noble (no pun intended)... and he actually practiced what he was preaching... Wouldn't this be more along the lines of the Nobel for science? How does this earn him a peace prize?

Hitler was nominated.

Well, in all fairness that nomination was more of a joke from a Swede who was pissed about some other nomination, rather than a serious nomination.
Besides, nominations can be made by anyone qualified, actually handing the prize out on the other hand...

Ah well, I'll always look at the prizes in chemistry, physics, and medicine as the proper prizes.

What has Gore done for global warming? Other than adding to it and making scientifically inaccurate documents about it? And what the hell does global warming have to do with world peace?

Worst nomination, ever.

I think it should have fallen under the Science category... Peace prize seems to be a popularity contest now.

I drive into work very early (my job allows me to set my work time) so I was on the road by 4:45 AM Eastern....

It was obvious he was going to win it, just disappointed he has to share it with THAT committee.

Not even close, Arafat being nominated and winning was far worse.

Good for Gore - he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

Maybe someone will award Bush the 'WAR' prize.

He will have to settle for 'the greatest disaster in American history'.

Maybe he'll get a saying like America piddled while God talked to burning Bush, the ash from Crawford Texas.

Well, it's official. The Nobel Peace Prize is a joke. That's really too bad because it used to mean something.

This is a guy who people have sympathy for because of the 2000 election, and as others have said profits off of global warming and does nothing himself to help the cause other than tell people that THEY have to fight the good fight, is going to be running around saying "listen to me!! I have a peace prize!!"

Yes, Climate Change is a fact. No, no one has proven that it's man made. I challenge anyone here (even Al Gore himself) to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that humans are causing it.

He's not going to run, I think he's had enough of that whole mess and I don't blame him.

Thus far the character assassination in this thread has been mild, I don't expect that to last.

Snopes proof of Gore's wastfulnessWTF, seriously?

Its been proven that Al Gore is a classic example of "Do what I say, not what I do."

Maybe if he acted like he did now, eight years ago, and not the stiff he was, he could have done more.....but wait, he's just another attention whore in the attention whoring US!

Ok I will play your game.
Prove "beyond a shadow of a doubt" that humans are not causing any of it.

What does global warming have to do with peace?

The Nobel Peace Prize is just a popularity contests. That is what it looks like to me. The Gates Foundation is more worthy of a Peace Prize.
