It looks like a bad year for skiing so far....

I was just checking the snow reports for Utah and Colorado. SLC has roughly 60" currently mid-mountain at most resorts and Vail has only 32".

These are numbers I would expect for early December. Does anything think it would be worth planning a trip for mid-March this year? I'll be in Utah on business, just trying to decide if it's worth booking a few extra nights there. I haven't seen a winter like this one since I started getting into snowboarding so I don't know what to compare the weather patterns with.
(probably similar to a season in the mid-90s with El Nino making the season land late)

It's even worse for ski resorts here in WNY.
Losing at least one million a day when not at full capacity.

Late Feb would be my guess. There's a lot of moisture in the air right now from the warm Summer and all it will take is a good cold front to trigger it all.

I've boarded there like 3-4 times so far and went for a week last year. I basically have airfair covered there because I'll be there for a week anyhow...just have to figure out if it's going to be worth paying the lift-tickets and extra hotel charges. Once I book my flight, I won't be able to change it easily.

Normally I've seen the snow mid-mountain around 90" in march....sometimes up to 110+, but I don't know if they'll ever get a big storm to get the extra snowfall they need to maintain reasonable conditions....especially late in the season like that.

It ain't any better in Europe. I was in Austria over New Years and we had to go above 7000 feet to board as all other resorts in Tyrolia, including Kitzbühel were spring green.

The few open glacier resorts (Hintertux and Stuibaital, 10000ft+) were pretty amazing though

The Alps usually have a lot of icy conditions from what my friends have told me. They said you really have to watch the reports to get good powder unless you know where to really go. (they just hit a few places in Switzerland)

Anyhow, if anyone wants to go meet up and split a hotel room, let me know. I'll probably be there a few days from like either March 15/16 through the 17th and will be renting a car. So if we split those costs, it would make it a lot cheaper for whoever can make it. I just want to get 2-3 days in if I can before it all melts.

March is usually the big snow season of the year for the Colorado ski resorts. I'm guessing SLC is going to be about the same...

SLC usually gets a lot more in November/December. They'll have 2 or 3 large storms that leave 30-60 inches in the canyons. The problem is I think the temp has been too warm and most of that's melted off. They're currently at 150" of annual snowfall.....on average, they have 550" or more. I just hope it stays cold and they get the precipitation...then it will be on.

I just got back from a trip to Colorado last Sunday. I skied Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, and Vail. Copper was windblown and not all that great conditions. Breck had plenty of powder on the non-windy sides and the back bowls at Vail were incredible. So, the base numbers certainly mean something, but the more important number is snow in the past 4-7 days. 30-40 inches is enough to cover most rocks/trees/etc, so anything over that isn't all that relevant. 40 inch base with 7 inches of fresh snow is awesome skiing.

Snow is OK here in UT....Park City had a couple inches of fresh powder this weekend, and the coworker said they enjoyed Saturday up there.

BTW, no freaking warm snap here...it's been below freezing in the valley for like 3 weeks now...below zero most nights at my house.

There's 10+ feet of base up on Hood and Bachelor. Been a good year so far.

Unless it snows a LOT in Utah between now and then, I wouldn't.

I was up in Snowbird last weekend (very cold, in was in the negatives, nice since not many people were out) but the snow was bad. Just not enough base, it was like skiing in November/December. Most of the major runs were ok since they were making snow nonstop but the blacks and double blacks were just too rocky and my skis got a couple of nice gouges.

I have a season pass to Snowbird (30day pass) but I probably won't be going up for another few weeks when hopefully they'll have more snow.

139" so far this year at my closest resort - Angel Fire in NM. Current base 56". I think this is one of their best years ever. They were barely 1/3 open at this time last year.
