After waiting more than 1/5 of my 17 years for broadband the time is soon coming where I will be able to experience speed in the comfort of my own home. I currently have a website titanmiller.com I would like to host the site on my own computer now. I guess I need some help on this.

-what web server software (free/good)
-need to be able to FTP to it
-can I mask my domain on top of a no-ip service URL<< eg. turn titanmiller.noip.com into titanmiller.com

and any other helpful information that you have
Thanks a bunch!

Any suggestions on other free server software that has more options than the analogX program?

If possible I want something with basic stats functions.

There is huge amount of servers out there some are free.

It is really hard to judge for some one else.

One way tog o is the Windows way by using Microsoft IIS v6. It comes with WinXP and needs to be installed.

Link to: IIs resource Site

Otherwise a simple but very capable free HTTP can be found here.

Link to: Abyss Web Server.

For stand alone FTP server I would use Filezilla:

Link to: FileZilla Server.

Otherwise, you can also log to your favorite Shareware site and enter into the search the term Web Server and look of what is coming up.

I just got done talking to the company and I was expecting more but the basic plan is 256/256 with 256k upgrade for every extra $10. Since I live with my parents I will probably throw in $20 per month to bring it to 768/768.

BTW, this is land based wireless = really low lantency

It's either landline or wireless and all wireless has more lag (in varying degrees) then a landline.

Youve checked with your broadband provider and they allow hosting servers on their connections? Most ISPs do *not* allow you to host servers on their connections, and thats usually in their ToS. Id suggest that you make sure you are allowed to do so before you set it all up. Itd be a shame to get it all setup, then have them cut you off.

On the issue of:
"-can I mask my domain on top of a no-ip service URL<< eg. turn titanmiller.noip.com into titanmiller.com "
Its a very doable thing to do. All you need to do is get titanmiller.com to DNS to titanmiller.noip.com which will inturn DNS into your dynamically provided IP.

Yep, asked them today. At first they said I would need to upgrade to their business class service (for the sole purpose of a static IP) but when I told them that I planned on using a DNS service they said no problem.

As far as lantency is concerned, it should be only 10-20ms over a pure T1 line, the antenna hooks to the router through CAT5 and at the speed of light the signal travels to the tower 4.5 miles away where a T1 is waiting. Most people I have heard say they get <50ms most of the time.

I highly recommend Apache for the webserver, however, I recommed that you do *not* run the webserver on the same machine that you do your normal activities on. The reasons:
-if you play a game, youre eating up 100% CPU usage, thereby making page loads a tad slower
-any crashes/stability problems affect your computer will affect your viewers
-if someone exploits a bug in your webserver, theyd have free romp of any sensitive files you have

I would suggest you throw together an older P3 1Ghz machine with 128MB+ of RAM, toss Windows 2000 Server on it, install the webserver and FTP server and have at it. Windows 2000 is rock-solid and that older machine will easily be able to handle its jobs as well as any other menial tasks you throw at it(IRC, MSN, etc).

Thats just what I would do though. Ive ran webservers on my home machine before. It works, but just keep in mind that whenever you have a problem on your computer, so will anyone thats trying to access your site.

As for the FTP server, I dont use them much, so I couldnt tell you.

And as for your last point, I think I answered that in my other post.

Thanks for all the help, that last link looks really good.

As for Abix's post, I will be running the server on pretty much dedicated comptuer, I might still use it for web browsing but not much more.
