Due to arrive today, but my case and tempered glass screen protector arrive Friday. I wonder if I can survive the holiday without opening the box?

I had a feeling the notification wouldn't work, so I just checked every day until the preorder was available, and snagged one the instant it was.

I'll see how much I want to play with it before the screen protector goes on and post some initial stuff either tonight or tomorrow.

Nice. I'm very curious to hear user opinions of the 950 and 950 XL. I bought a Microsoft Band 2 and I'm likely going to be looking at the 950 when the price comes down to use on T-Mobile so I can play with Cortana (since I can't use this feature with Android).

Make sure you apply for the free continuum dock.

I'm looking forward for your impressions with the 950XL. What phone are you upgrading from?

Didn't realize they were selling their two new phones unlocked. It took them long enough to realize carrier exclusives were stupid. It looks like a pretty nice phone. I like the expandable storage (200gb? Sure, why not!)

I had a Lumia 1520, but the screen mysteriously cracked several months ago. I picked up a Lumia 830 to use until the new WP flagships came out. The 830 is nice except it's very slow even in WP8.1, and the screen has around 40-50 stuck pixels.

I'm hoping the (seemingly Samsung) AMOLED display doesn't suck, because I've had LCD quality issues on both the 1520 and the 830.

Still wondering if it's a Samsung display or not. I hate the PenTile diamond pixels, since it's not a real 1440p. But the provided spec of 518 PPI only matches the Samsung display. The other brands that have real RGB are slightly different (517 PPI, 515 PPI, etc.)

Initial impressions: WOW.

So far without taking off the protective plastic for sake of putting on the screen protector easily, I'm impressed. Build quality feels excellent, the screen looks great. If it's truly Samsung diamond pixel pentile, I'll live with it. W10 seems more fluid, responsive, and has more convenience features than 8.1. The included cables are excellent, as well. Unfortunately I won't be posting any camera shots or anything until I Friday night.

Edit: No new dubstep ringtone. Weak, Microsoft.

My impressions have significantly changed.

Long story short, it's been the worst experience with a new phone I've ever had. My attempt to reset and restore has broken things further. I'm about to send it back and tell Microsoft to $##$ off, but I'm waiting to hear back from Lumia Support before I forget Windows phone forever.

Hardware is awesome, software is terrible. Don't buy one unless you want to test some seriously pre-beta level software.

Out of curiosity, what prompted the need to reset and restore?

Yeah, with no context, I would just call PEBKAC.

I wish it was PEBKAC, that would be easier to fix.

Initially the OS seemed much nicer and more refined than WP8.1, but it had frequent issues where apps or settings (which are treated like apps) would crash on open or when changing an option in the setting. Sometimes it would happen multiple times in a row, meaning I would have to open the particular setting menu 2-3 or more times to even have a chance to change a setting.

I could live with that, since it will very likely be worked out with updates to the settings and/or the OS. I did, however, notice my wifi performance was terrible. I verified my router is working properly, tested with multiple other wireless devices, and determined it was the phone's fault. On my Airport Extreme, I was pulling 200+ms latency and only 20-30 mbit on my 125 mbit connection. My old Lumia 1520 consistently achieved <15ms latency and around 90-110 mbit depending on my distance from the router.

I did a soft reset and it did nothing. I tried a hard reset, which also did nothing, but for some reason broke my messaging app. It would now close upon loading consistently. Since the app fully closed itself, I could not hard-close the app. I tried, once again, a soft reset and a hard reset with no fix after either. I decided to do a reset and restore to try and fix the messaging app and the wifi performance.

Upon initiating the reset, the phone simply shutoff and stayed off for several minutes. I was concerned, so I attempted to turn the phone on. It showed the Microsoft splash screen, followed by the Windows loading logo, then shut off. After 5-6 attempts to turn it on, finally the reset screen came up and it began to restore the phone. After the progress bar finished, the phone shut off and did not turn back on again. Repeat the previous procedure, and the new phone setup finally came up after 3-4 attempts to turn the phone on.

Prior to resetting, I saved my contacts and messages using the new "Contacts+Messages Backup" app that was being advertised by Lumia Help on twitter. I saved them to my SD card, and chose to not format it during the reset. After bringing the phone back up, setting up the initial settings, and logging into my Microsoft account, I attempted to restore my contacts and messages. On the first attempt, it crashed and exited the app in the middle of restoring the messages. I re-opened it and initiated a restore again, and it crashed again. I tried changing some settings for the restore, and could not get it to work.

I gave up, and figured whatever messages and contacts I could re-sync from my onedrive would probably be fine. I looked in my contacts to find it added several copies of each contact I had attempted to restore. When I tried to delete them, the People app crashed. Opening it to look, none of them were deleted. Repeat this multiple times, and the app crashes consistently. I can't delete the duplicate contacts.

Going into my messaging app, hoping I can at least use the phone until updates come around, my contacts have been fragmented. It separated the Skype and SMS contacts for each person I talk to. (Previously they were unified in a single thread, and I was able to select SIM 1 or Skype to send messages to). It would be a relatively simple fix to merge the contacts again, however I noticed I now no longer have an option to message the skype contacts. It defaults to SIM 1, does not allow me to change it to Skype, and when I try to send a message it tells me the contact information is invalid.

All this while I correctly receive Skype messages in the very threads that are broken. I tried hard-closing the app, soft and hard resets with no success. I signed out of my skype and microsoft account and re-signed in to them with no success. Wifi performance is still terrible, I can't message through skype, my contacts list is all kinds of whacked, and everything still crashes frequently.

Tell me that's a case of PEBKAC.

I'm trying another reset, but instead of restoring I am setting the phone up as a new device.

Honestly, it seems like a lemon.

I highly doubt the software would ship that broken.

Unfortunately I can't really find anyone else who has gotten a 950 or 950XL and reported their experience. I would try the Nokia Software Recovery Tool, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with this device despite listing it was compatible with Windows 10 mobile devices.

Doing a reset and not restoring but setting it up as a new device allowed me to delete all the extra contacts one-by-one and fixed my Skype issues. I'm just irritated at having so many bugs and having to do two restores in 4 days of usage. I still have crap for wifi performance and everything crashes all the time, but I'm going to try and wait it out for some updates.

I have the 950. Certainly not without it's bugs, I've had some issues with the new messaging app myself, but definitely not as bad as your experience.

Congrats! I broke my 640 working on my car this weekend so I'm going to have to replace it- there goes $40 down the drain ;p

Yikes, that sounds terrible! Did you buy it from Microsoft directly or your carrier? I would have probably run into wherever sold it to me and demanded a replacement.

I bought it directly from the Microsoft Store unsubsidized. I looked into returning it and since I purchased it during the holiday season I have until 2/1/2016 to request a return, so I think I will wait a few weeks and see if any updates come around to fix the crashing, poor wifi performance, and other bugs.

I really want to like this phone. I just hope Microsoft can make it likable soon enough.

I think you should exchange it, seems like there is some issue with the hardware if it is crashing that much.

How's your battery life? I was stuck at the ER then hospital for 19 hours today. I was able to charge until 10:30 AM (unplugged at 100%), then by 5:30 I was down to 16%. I was messaging via skype or messenging app every once in a while and browsed Anandtech a few times, but I don't think the phone was actually in use more than maybe 1.5-2 hours total.

I noticed the CPU is always warm, even when I pull it out of my pocket or pick it up off the desk from being in standby. Not sure if it's a WP10 thing or not.
