it should be mandatory that all cars have the 'auto brake if crash is imminent' tech

it seems that most accidents are caused by drivers being dumb shits and/or not paying attention to driving.

they should make it mandatory that all cars use that laser guidance thingamabob that detects that you won't be able to brake on time and will auto-apply the brake for you.

it will save lives and lower insurance costs.

And what if it makes you brake and then you get smashed up the rear and end up in a worse situation, when you could instead possibly have swerved out of the way?

I think there will be more and more of this technology making its way into cars, but it will happen gradually. It will take a decade or two at minimum before the vast majority of cars on the road can talk to each other and take into account the cars that still can't. But partial implementations, like some form of frontal crash avoidance, will probably become pretty common sooner than most people would expect.

Honestly, why don't people just not tailgate? In this country we don't teach people how to drive anymore...we just give them a license and tell them they are free to hit the road along with every other vehicle on it.

At least the OP spelled brake correctly.

i disagree. i would rather have control of the vehicle in case i can swerve out of the way or somehow turn the vehicle to minimize damage.

also, this technology would have to function at 100% constantly or it could easily become fatal (eg - random braking on highway).

all I want out of life is auto driving.

between gps and all the miscellaneous sensors, it seems like it should be possible.

Absolutely fucking not. Let the dumb shits and inattentive drivers suffer their consequences, rather than be bailed out by another piece of technology.

i'm sure you'll feel the same way when you get rear ended or tboned.
or if a loved one dies because the guy behind them was fiddling with a cell phone on the highway and didn't notice traffic coming to a halt.

LOL at thinking only those who cause accidents suffer consequences. Isn't it usually the people who are hit who suffer worse?

So you drive a car with no power steering, traction control, and abs?

Sure... just increase the cost of each car by $15,000. Maybe $5,000 for the actual components and $10,000 for the insurance to cover the car company when something goes wrong. It's already a payday if you have an accident and your airbag fails to deploy... assuming you live.

As with lots of tech that shows up on cars like the S class....

Wait some years and it might trickle down
