I've worked with KForce, TEK, and Robert Half.

My current gig came through Robert Half.

EDIT: Didn't finish thought...

KForce and TEK kept sending me on one day, 3 hour jobs for joke money. I'd take 'em if I wasn't doing anything else (like playing Quake). The gig I have now is full time/perm. Robert Half just acted as a headhunter.

A problem with Half is they will advertise vaporware positions to get resume submissions that they can use at a later date.

I get alot of emails where they're using copy/paste templates claiming to have read my resume and go on to list some job I'm in no way qualified for. If I was a CCNP with 5-10 years experience I probably wouldn't have my resume up on monster.

I know, right? It's annoying to get these automated e-mails for positions that require a certain number of years experience that they could easily see I do not have if they actually read my resume.

They(mass marketers) do not read the resumes.
They have a search engine that looks for key words from a job order and then trolls the job boards look for those keyword matched.
The contact information is extracted and the email sent out without any human intervention

I let TEK Systems take me out to dinner and beers prior to graduating.

I had already accepted another offer.

Ive worked with Kforce briefly, but my new company is Adecco.

DONT EVER TAKE A JOB FROM THEM!!

My old recruiter was really top notch, Ben Winrich, very cool guy and really wanted to make sure I was taken care of. Well..........they let him go and my new recruiter takes 3 weeks to reply to me, and once he replies its to divert me to someone else. The company decided that they didnt feel like paying me for a couple of weeks, so I called the help desk and they told me to see my local branch. The closest office to me is about 10 - 15 minutes away from where I work, so a trip during lunch down there isnt so bad. I get there and am greeted by the least personable person I have ever met, who eventually gets so fed up with talking that he points to a girl that just walked in and closes his eyes. So clearly need to talk to her...............well, apparently she doesnt think Adecco contrcts for Dell and tells me that im lying. After I prove my employment she tells me that this isnt my office and that I need to go deal with Austin, TX. That doesnt work for me, I live in NH. Long (very) story short, I called the helpdesk again and told them what happened and they gave me all my missed pay included in my next paycheck. But the hoops I had to jump through to get that to happen are unacceptable.

So again..........NEVER work for Adecco!

I've been doing the contracting side of things for the last year and a half. It's been great (although sometimes worrisome) and I wouldn't mind continuing to do it if I wasn't married. In general the medical / dental / 401k etc aren't as good as direct hire, but the pay is above par and you can negotiate other things like time off.

I increased my salary by over 30% just hopping contracts for a year. Also the negotiating is wayyyy better. I always ask what the range is up front before even considering an interview. I talked up a an offer by about 30% before declining it anyway (I wanted more than a 30% increase).

Overall it's paid off. You get experience on projects you might never have worked on before. You take that experience to your next contract and you're worth more.

I've been on my current position for about 10 months now... when 12 months hit I'll get a sweet increase so I don't move elsewhere (I've already been offered 25% increases but like where I'm at for the time being).

I was part of interviewing at where I work (but not the hiring manager) and I was surprised at how high the pay rates were for people who were candidates. Rates were about $80/hr for senior software developers which is way more than I make. However, I'm salaried, not hourly. Does that $80/hr rate include the recruiter's cut or is it only the candidate's cut? The candidates were asking for ~$90K/year for a salaried position which is normal for my area.

Also, I've worked with Robert Half before and I would not recommend them. I've gotten 2 jobs from them before and their pay rate is very bad.

I'm a recruiter for a major consulting company. I recruit for contract roles.

Not trying to give a sales pitch, but no job is permanent. Most jobs pitched "contract-to-hire" are 3-4 months on contract. If you don't suck, you get the job. It really limits your opportunities if you go direct hire only, and you usually don't end up with the best match because interviewing can never compare to actually doing the job for a few months.

Staffing has very high turnover, so you get a lot of numbskulls calling you. The key is to develop longstanding relationships with good people you trust. Typically one or two rounds on Monster, getting 50 calls and meeting a bunch of recruiters, you can find the 3-4 you want to work with long-term.

Recruiting is sales, so if the job isn't "real" you likely won't get called on it. I prioritize what can close this week, so the 'hottest' job orders are what I work on. My time is valuable and I wouldn't call you to chat about a fake position.

Companies pay our bills, not you. Just like any other company we need to offer competitive pay or we wouldn't get any employees.

Finding a job on your own is not always a better idea. Most companies are terrible at hiring, and often set people up to fail because they are clueless. Consulting companies do this all day, every day, for a living, and they are pretty good at qualifying who will work and who will not.

Question.
If a position is advertised by a staffing agency at $100/hr (which means the client is paying $200 to the staffing agency) and the talent requests $120, does the agency then go back to the client and ask for an additional $20 or does the difference come from their bottom line?

$80/hr isn't unheard of for skilled technical work. When I worked for an MSP, my time was billed out at between $100-150/hr.

that's what the talent gets.
your company is probably paying the agency > $150/hr.

I can charge $80/hr for SharePoint gigs, undercut most, and make a nice chunk of change without the middle man. At that rate, most companies won't blink considering it is considerably less than the market rate for a SharePoint consultant. I've got some inquiries from people here on AT and at other sites about doing SharePoint work for them and the way I look at it, they're getting a good resource at very good prices and I'm making good money while keeping my day job and awesome benefits. I've thought about doing contracting full time but I think I want a little more experience first.

typically hourly wage is around or less than 30%.

Especially if you are getting a good benefits package like I am.

It comes down to management that two employees making within $20-30 bucks of each other will be used much differently at my level.

Do any of you have any experience with the following IT staffing firms:

TEK Systems
Robert Half Technology
KForce
Apex Systems

Did you find them to be helpful? Otherwise, what is your opinion on IT staffing firms in general?

I've had positive experience/knowledge with two of them, TEK and HRT. At work we use Kelly IT.

It's a good route for entry - mid jobs if you want contract work or temp to hire.

I hate TEK Systems and Robert Half Technology... they were always trying to shoehorn me into jobs that I wasn't completely qualified for.

For example, the recruiter brought me in for an interview for a job that required five years experience and certification in Sun Solaris... and I didn't even have it on my resume. The recruiter's logic? I had Linux and AIX on my resume, and they are "almost" the same. Yeah... not quite. You can't fake five years of experience in much of anything technical.

I've had good luck with TekSystems, or at least, with one recruiter there who got me my current position. But what you describe seems pretty typical of many (most?) recruiters. There is a local IT firm where the recruiter I worked for literally was an apartment manager before her current stint as an IT recruiter. She as nice but didn't understand things well.

TEKSystems found me a contract job that turned into "permanent" job. I had a great recruiter who still keeps in touch with me and takes me out for lunch and coffee. If I decide to leave my current job I will go back with them to find me another contract job. As others have said, they recruit for regular jobs in addition to contract jobs.

If you are in the Birmingham, AL area let me know and I will send you her contact info.

I've been contracting for about 13 years or so. I'm pretty sure I've worked with just about all the contract houses, with the exception of the odd ball ones that pop up here and there. It really comes down to two things, the recruiter you're working with, and the type of work you're willing to do. Most of these places are just temp work, and it's not the glamorous stuff. You do get more money typically than the FTEs that work in the places, but you get a lot more grief from them. I could prob write a book with all the horror stories about a lot of those jobs, but all in all it paid the bills well for years. I'm only ending that streak and taking a full time job because the company I've been working full time for made an offer to convert me that was worth it.
