I've been driving for about 22 years with no tickets.

I always chuckle when people think it's impressive that they've made it a whole 4 years without getting a ticket.

1) Learn my lesson and pay the fine. Since I have no previous incidents, I qualify for the 'Safe Driver Diversion' where I pay the fine and nothing gets reoprted to the DMV. I dont' even have to attend driving school.

The guy obviously cut you off and the cop didn't see that and the cop was a tard. (1 car length at those speeds = cutting someone off.)

Here we have to pay the full amount of the ticket up front as "bail" to fight it in court. Definitely go to court, if the police officer does not show up then you will get it dismissed. If he does show up plea "No contest" and state that you differ in your opinion of your following distance. The judge should cut your fine in half and send you on your way.

For my first ticket, I pled not guilty, showed up in court, and asked the judge to knock it down to 5 over - usually, if they know it's your first time, they'll give you a "conviction" that doesn't carry points and send you on your way. This was in PA, so YMMV.
