Hahah made me 3 coffees tonight, all 3 following NetWareHead advices and it was really good, near perfect coffee (to my taste).

1-Filled the pot without compacting
2-Put it on the stove at low temp so it does solwly boil and percolate
3-Enjoyed!

Gonna have to try many combinaisons of water/coffee and see whats best but for now the slow boiling and no compacting works wonders!

That sounds really really good .... how does it compare to french press?
Now I'm wanting to get a percolator ... grrrrr!

among coffee snobs (like me), percolators are generally considered the worst way to make coffee.

1 - proper espresso (expensive, lots of work)
2 - french press ($20ish, my choice. i LOVE it!)
3 - drip (braun makes a decent one, but i gave it away after my first cup of french press)
4 - rat squeezings
5 - percolator

Technically a moka is different..

Big coffee fan myself here. Kimbo, Lavazza, Illy are my faves though we keep some bustello around because its so damn cheap.


If you want a great cup of coffee but dont want to spend 10 bucks on a can get the bustello brand...its cheap ususally 3 dollars or less for a good tasting cup of espresso...

Glad to hear. I find that compacting up to a certain point produces more flavorful and dense coffee. Too much and the coffee comes out burned. Good luck.

Yep...my open packs of good coffee stay in the freezer and the bustelo is in the pantry or fridge.

espresso pot = percolator?

Percolator by strict definition that water has to pass through coffee grounds. It is not a lazy percolation relying on gravity to filter the water through the grinds. In a moka pot or restaurant style espresso machine, boiling water under pressure is force-percolated through the espresso grounds.

Yep...my open packs of good coffee stay in the freezer and the bustelo is in the pantry or fridge.

I heard it was not a good idea to keep coffee in the freezer since grounded coffee easily absorbs odors from anything (like baking soda).

But if thats a myth damn i'll keep mine in the freezer too!

Well you should be keeping it in an airtight container first and foremost so any smells can't get to the coffee. I keep mine in the freezer to extend the life of it as much as possible once opening the vacuum sealed pack.

I got an air tight box for that and I think I'll put it in the freezer since after 2 weeks the coffee smells/tastes different.

A French press or a decent conventional coffee maker is superior to a percolator because the last uses boiling water which is coffee sin. You are trying to extract flavor not cook coffee. Ideal water temp is from about 195-205. What I do is boil water then pour the correct amount into a measuring cup then into the French Press. That cools it by about 10 degrees.

I love my Hamilton Beach percolator. It's my favorite second to French press. I'm currently using an auto drip for convenience, but I prefer the perc coffee.

Molti ristoranti vicino a me, ho visto che usano Lavazza in macchina superautomatica. Qua, solamente i "coffee shops" o di alcuni ristoranti costosi o famosi servono illy, ma si paga per questa qualità.

Lo so che Illy e' cara , pero' dal mio punto di vista non essendo un forte consumatore di caffe' preferisco berne pochi ma buoni piuttosto che tanti ma meno buoni.


Altri caffe' eccellenti che ho provato sono quelli del commercio equo-solidale

Io dico che preferisco Miscela d'Oro contro Illy, sensa pensare al prezzo. Illy e buono a bastanza, pero non e il migliore.

Tutto a nostri gusti, pero. E meglio avere caffe che ci piace che no, vero?
