Itching to start the new PC build [updated]

Ordered a big pile of stuff from newegg to build a new PC and delivery is expected on Friday. Planned to start Friday night and finish over the weekend so I don't have to mess with it over a long period, as some weeknights I wouldn't have time to work on it.

A few minutes ago, a knock on the door... two big boxes from newegg are sitting on the porch. Somehow they got shipped faster than I paid for.

Can't start on it now, no time to work on it tomorrow night. All that gleaming hardware, ready to become a PC to replace my five-year-old dinosaur... and I can't touch it for two days.

I didn't think I would be that psyched to get it done but now that the stuff is sitting.... right.... here.... This is just torturous.

Update: It went better than I had possibly imagined. Posted on the first try and the only assembly issue was I didn't have the data cable on the DVD fully seated which didn't take very long to figure out. After everything was OK I had Win 7 installed in no time. Now I face the painful process of reinstalling tons of software and configuring email accounts.

Did stop to let the Asus TurboV system try it's auto-overclocking magic and it did a fine job. Had to slow it back down because the CPU temp was too high, though, and I only have a stock cooler.

It's incredibly fast and quiet. I'm quite satisfied. Way ahead of where I thought I would be at this time.

Good things come to those who wait.

Have you taken it all out of the boxes and fondled it a little bit? That may take the edge off.

I can't justify building a new system so long as I have student loans to pay and my current system is fine.

But oh, do I want to order some parts from Newegg and start building a new one.

Want to build a new system, have the money, just don't want to spend it (cheap). And what the hell happened to Ram prices? It was $60 or less for 4Gb DDR2 a few months back.

At least open the parts and smell them!

The smell of a fresh PSU and the smell of deathstars emerging from the static bag is unmatched bliss!

Perfectly happy with my current rig... thinking about iMac after this one or a Macbook

I paid $10 and $20 for the last 2x2Gb sets of DDR2 that I bought. It's sad.

I can't wait to build a new PC myself but I have about 10k of loan to pay first. Good thing my current PC is running smooth, I'm sure I can squeeze quite a few more years from it if I really want to. Most of my major stuff is done on my main server anyway.

I'm waiting just like you and haven't opened the boxes...No need to waste time opening boxes when I haven't recieved the other parts.
I've recieved HDD's and my 2x 1800RPM Gentle Typhoons today.

I'm still waiting on PSU, RAM, videocard, motherboard, and Megahalem.
All have shipped(and should be here by Sat hopefully) except RAM(which still says "charged" for the past 2 days at the egg).

you are going to have to fill me in on "deathstars". I've had nothing exciting when taking a part out of the static bag.
Well, other than the pure bliss of "OMG OMG, new stuff, OMG, faster, yay!" like I'm a kid getting the most awesomest remote control car that I've been asking for forever.

Sometimes it has been slightly modified, like "OMG new part, OMG, PC might work again, yay!"
I hate the process of ordering that part and installing it, because the anxiety of "will it work? oh sweet jesus please do the trick!" is just overwhelming. I get all twitchy.

After your first few builds, it doesn't get as exciting. Piecing together a computer is now a 30 minute exercise. I guess that doing something like water cooling or some other custom mod would be fun.

Follow your nose!

Too bad so many of them ended up taking a dump.

Too many people remember this about deathstars:

Glass platters are a good security feature though! If you MUST absolutely be SURE the data is GONE forever and quick just slap the drive hard on a solid surface like a concrete floor. If you shake it and it sounds like a box full of broken glass you've erased it!

So I know the brand you are referring to now, I wasn't thinking of HDDs. However, I never knew any manufacturers used glass platters! Wow.
Never had the pleasure of owning such a drive or even working around one unless I just never knew it.

edit:
I thought platters have always been a metallic medium (oddly enough never felt a desire to research this, one of the few things I have never really looked into - very strange for me to not have done this before), and never even thought of glass as a potential platter basis as, well... that just sounds like a reliability issue. I realize the coating process would be the same, but I can just imagine the worries of "will it arrive intact" after they have been shipped.

What are you uprading from? And to?

Current: 2.8ghz Pentium 4, XP, 200gb IDE HDD, 2Gb RAM, Asus P5GDC-V mobo. Full tower case that's 10 years old although the guts are 5 years old. Also has the 60Gb HDD from the PC I had before I built this one, and it still runs.

New: i7-860, Win 7 Pro, 2x640Gb HDD, 4Gb RAM, Asus P7P55D EVO mobo, Lian-li PC-B10 mid-tower case. Also new SATA DVD burner.

It's going to be a shock.

That's a solid 100x faster, lol. Ah, nice. Video card or no? And yeah, just stay up late and build it is my reccomendation. Biggest upgrade for me was a CeleronD to a Core2 and FX5500 > 7600GT. Lol. D:

I'm in the same boat! Except I'll be waiting until Jan. to get my stuff put together. Already bought a new PSU though and it's sitting here looking at me.

I'll be leaving a AMD64 system that aside from the processor is nearing its 5 year mark. D:

I have three shipments from Newegg that I ordered Monday (a new system). Everything but the case should be delivered tonight, but won't be able to put it together until Friday when the case comes, so I understand.
