Vista came with my laptop. I've never had the issues people have been complaining about. Besides. I have no idea how a search of your computer is anti-competitive. Even if it was, they should've give people the option of what they wanted in that space rather than removing a perfectly good feature.

Well, I guess it can't be helped. I will re-install SP1 again and follow the suggestions in that link. Thanx.

I don't remember what the exact shortcut is but the search box is still available by using a keyboard shortcut. I'm sure you can find it on google.

Looks like there's a better way to get it back.

IMHO I'm all for them being OPEN to 3rd party customizations / enhancements. Instead of REMOVING the option they should have just made it CONFIGURABLE to the end user.

I'd actually like ALL menus to be configurable. If I never accidentally click on "SEND TO" or "PRINT" or whatever when I don't intend to and never/rarely use those menu options, I'll be happy.

See these for possible fixes to restore the search options and info. about the changes;
YMMV, I haven't done these YET, and hacking your registry can be complicated/dangerous, though it looks like there are some less drastic options too:

Does anyone know what happened to the Windows Ultimate Extras that used to show up in Windows Update (Bit Locker, Hold 'em, Dreamscene)? I've been meaning to install those but they aren't showing up anymore...any way to get them back?

I haven't even installed SP1 yet, just the updates before it. Right now it is showing 1 important update 65-427mb which is SP1.

Uh I think the DreamScene and the game may have been 'extras'.

Bitlocker is (AFAIK) a core feature of Ultimate / Enterprise and better be either installed already or available through 'add/remove windows components' in control panel.

Ultimate Extras seems like it was vaporware propaganda, AFAIK they pretty much didn't ever come out with much anything great for it and sort of swept the whole fiasco under the carpet. I see a lot of people with Ultimate complaining (with valid points) that all the cool / useful upcoming extras Microsoft alluded to never materialized.

I've heard other people complain there's nothing new or they don't get any available extras to install listed either. IDK.

He's referring to the BitLocker partition configuration thingy that was/is an Ultimate Extra.

They should still show up...maybe you hid them? Check restore hidden updates.

I tried and to restore hidden updates but there were none to restore. I'll try installing SP1 and see what happens though I've read other accounts of the same thing happening even after SP1.

I kept telling myself I would install Hold em and all that and just never got around to it.

Installed standalone for x64, all 7xx MB of it. Didn't take long to download (uber fast msft upload speed) and everything works great. No complaints here.

Still no SP1 for me through Windows Update. I've installed all the previous stuff it has thrown at me. Is there something I'm still missing or do they just hate me at microsoft?

It's there already on MSDN if you have account there, 32 and 64bit. Also the DVD w/ built-in SP1 is already leaked out and on P2P.

I just installed SP1 through windows update last night and everything went quickly and flawlessly. I noticed an immediate performance improvement even though the superfetch cache had been cleared so I can only imagine that it will get better over the next few weeks. Overall, everything just seemed to respond a little faster and little more smoothly. Hopefully I won't be eating my words anytime soon.

For those who are curious, my Vista machine has this setup:

Vista Home Premium 32 bit
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Mobo
The standard SoundMax onboard for that mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 series CPU
Nvidia 7800GT 256mb
2GB Corsair memory (I forgot the details, but I got it a year ago and it was supposed to be some of the best quality RAM they had at the time.)

So far I have had no driver issues or software mishaps at all. I am able to play video just fine, games work great, and I am having no internet or networking issues. I was nervous at first because of the rumors I was hearing about Nvidia driver issues but I have not had a problem yet. I do not have a DX10 card though so I am not sure if some of the video issues I have been hearing about are isolated to that. The only thing which I have not tested yet is whether or not my setup with the 360 is still working fine for wirelessly streaming videos and music through WMP11. I'll test that today.

I got it installed with no problems except for some nail biting when the progress meter stopped for a bit and the hard drive light stopped blinking.

The only real difference I have found so far is that it fixed a recent problem (never used to happen) where firefox, thunderbird or iexplorer lost their connection after the machine slept and woke up. It used to require me closing and then reopening the applications. With SP1, that seems to be fixed. Not sure if it was SP1 or just the resetting the install did.

Tried the X64 Standalone and got errors 5 minutes into the install. Not sure what's up, but there's nothing wrong with my hardware...

I'm restoring to before SP1, I lost my dual tuner's sound and my RF keyboard.

What a POS...

Did you try reinstalling the drivers?

Yep on the tuner cards, several reboots no dice, I just rolled my HTPC back to pre SP1, screw it.

My RF keyboard is plug & play no special drivers, lost the trackball that's built in...
