Ibuprofen that is.

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Patricia Singletary, a mother of 4, has signed many student handbooks over the years, but said she never knew Muscogee County School District had specific guidelines for students bringing over the counter medicine to school.

Singletary found out the hard way when she received a call from her son's school. The assistant principal told Singletary, Dillon, an 8th grader at Double Churches Middle School was being suspended for 2 days because he had Ibuprofen.

"I was upset because my son is a good student; he never gets into trouble and makes good grades," explained Singletary.

Dillon makes straight A's she added, and he wasn't aware he was breaking school policy.

"My son had a headache; he just asked a classmate if she had any ibuprofen. She got it and handed it to him in his hand and the teacher saw it and took them directly to the office. He didn't even take the pill."

Both students were suspended. "I thought it was too harsh, why couldn't they have ‘in-school-suspension' or a warning"?

News Leader 9 took Singletary's concerns to school officials. Director of Communications Valerie Fuller, stated, "The policy itself does not change whether it's over the counter or prescription medication."

The policy is spelled out on page 11 of the student behavior handbook. Rule 7 states, "All medication (prescription/non-prescription/over the counter) is to be turned into the office prior to the beginning of the school day."

On the next page, it goes on to state,"If, in the judgment of the principal or designee, the student did commit the alleged offense, the student shall be immediately suspended from school."

Singletary said she's looked over the material, but not word for word. She wants other parents who may not be aware of the rule to talk it over with the children to avoid getting suspended from school.

Unfortunately I have to call Columbus, GA home for now... kind of shocked that this somehow ends up on Anandtech.

Damn I'm glad I went to a school at a time when there were reasonable people. I carried Tylenol and Orajel damn near all the time, without any issue. I knew what the allowable usage was, and any teacher who happened to see and was curious enough to ask received a simple explanation: I got bad headaches sometimes, and have chronic mouth ulcers. That was it, question answered, end of issue, no problems.

What's next, are we going to have to write with spherical erasers on paper that's pre-coated with graphite, so that students can't injure themselves or each other with freshly-sharpened pencils?

The suspension is stupid, but the Policy regarding Drugs seems kinda reasonable, but I think an 8th Grader should be responsible enough to use Ibuprofen safely.

You would think. But look at the parents of some of these kids and you would probably think better.

My mom had two easy ways of regulating my intake of tylenol:
- Instruct me that I was to take ONE of them if I started with a headache, and possibly a second one after an hour or so. NO MORE than two during a school day.
- Only send me to school with two tablets at any given time. Even so, the first set of instructions was pretty much the only regulation needed.

Sadly, we can't tell our kids what to do these days, or it might destroy their precious self-image, and they might sulk about it on Twitter for many long months.

Nah, they'll rant about it on Facebook more than they'll sulk on Twitter. Longer posts available on Facebook.

Yeah it's not so much the zero tolerance policy as suspending the kid that was the retarded thing to do. They could have just taken the pills from him and called his parents. Once they got the OK from the parents they could then give them back to him or dole them out as he needed them.

because explaining them why self-medication in 8th grade is not a good idea, is definately not something a school can teach....

Zero Tolerance=Zero Intelligence/Effort

For sure!

When I was in 8th grade, my poor little brother (3rd grade at the time) was a victim of the "zero tolerance policy". The principal caught me in the hall and told me to get in touch with my mom and have her come to the main office after school. She made it sound like my brother had murdered someone.

But no.

He had a tiny pocket knife that he was GIVEN at the hospital the last weekend when my dad took him along to make rounds. It had a hospital insignia on it and was little more than a toy. The "blade" (if you can call it that) was about 1/2 inch long and couldn't cut butter.

Well, the principal was all uppity with her new zero tolerance policy for "weapons" and decided it was time to make an example. Zero tolerance has to mean zero tolerance right?

She gave him 1 week out of school suspension and informed him next time was expulsion.

The only concession? My mom demanded they include a picture of the knife next to a quarter for reference in his permanent record, just so anyone could see how ridiculous this was.

First off, I'd (figuratively) die without my ibuprofen. As soon as I feel a twinge of a headache coming on, I'd better be taking something lest I end up with a full blown migraine.

Second:

Yeah... I wonder how this would go over with the girls that may be on birth control. I think not.
