"Replay is switching their pricing to a MONTLY fee JUST like TIVO... the new ones at CC for $149 dont include service."

The one i just picked up an hour ago at circuit city included 3 years service.

I can personally confirm this deal is legit from CC. I have mine up and running! Deal of the year for me...I really wanted one. I just wish I'd gotten another...but I did order one from AMAZON link when this first came out so we'll see if it comes with the Free Activation too.

I have the older 5000 series which has the Internet Sharing feature and Commerical Skip in tact.
Works great, never had any problems with it. I have the 5040 model (40gb drive) upgraded with a 160gb drive. I believe it is now possible to upgrade the unit with 2 physical hard drives now... 500GB??
This give me about 50 hours of record time at the highest quality.

It is hooked up via 100mbps ethernet. Using DVArchive you can rip shows and stream them off the Replay as well. Basically DVArchive makes your PC look like another Replay unit. You can also use an 802.11 B/G bridge if you want, however I've heard streaming doesn't work very well, even with G's speeds.

One nice feature, if you have two replay units, is the ability to watch a show on one unit, pause it, and continue on the other unit.

Just picked mine from the store. Each of them had the '3 years of service' sticker on the top. What a great deal for someone that still needed to buy my folks an Xmas gift.

Just went to CC and cancelled my order after reading their instore notice. I've read elsewhere that you can use the recorder without having the subscription service, is this true? I have only local stations (8 or something) so paying $13 a month is a REAL ripoff.

The unit is a paper weight without the subscription. You can't even do manual records without the service...

It would be less than $13 a YEAR....not a month. Tivo is $13 a month. ReplayTV becomes 99 cents a month after 3 YEARS....considering you're getting the unit for $150 with 3 years' service already included, that is NOT a ripoff.

Considering regular price is at least $350, you'd have to own this thing for almost 20 years before it stops being a bargain.

You should have taken the ReplayTV, Shearo. It DOES include a subscription for free...regardless of what they told you at CC. They tried to tell me the same thing...mine is working now and is registered.

Didn't anyone consider that ReplayTV could revoke the 3 years free for all units purchased at CC? I really don't want to buy a $135 brick!

snagged the one and only at clackamas, OR CC at lunch today and has the 3 yr sticker. This is an extreme YMMV since CC didnt even have replay units in stock at all and the stockboy said he only did one online pickup for a replaytv today and that was me.

How would they know you didn't buy the unit a couple of days ago for the old price with the 3 years of free service? Answer: they can't.

I don't understand how companies like Replay TV think they can get almost 500 bucks for something like this. I mean, you could build a MythTV box with a much bigger HD (and no monthly fees!) for less than that.

Pretty much the same way computer stores sell you a $1000 computer that you could build yourself for $500. Convience.

Any one have any idea how ReplayTV filing for Chapter 11 a while back can effect this? Will they be around 3 years from now?

This is a pretty sweet deal, I was within an inch of buying my sister a TiVo for xmas...the unit itself was 180.

ReplayTV was picked up by Denon I believe so they'll be around for a while. The reason for the $149 is b/c the new units will not have the 3yr service included. So these are the "old" units. All future models will be $149 w/o the 3yr. So make sure there's a sticker. There's no way for them to tell that you bought it from cc or amazen or egay.
