What does "Registered" mean? I went ahead and did the online registration, but now my service status only says "registered". Hopefully this also means it's activated, but I don't see a one-time fee paid or anything of that nature, nor do I believe I will now. Is calling the only way to confirm now?

Registration and Activation are 2 different things.

If you go to the Service Activation link on www.replaytv.com it says that ALL 5500 models are pre-activated with 3 years and as long as there is no "service activation" choice within the Setup Menu on the replaytv that the system is activated and working fine.

I called in and pretended I did nto know what I was doing and they confirmed that activation was complete and entered my personal info for my serial number into their system. THey said that in 2.5 years they woudl start sending me messages about continuing my service.

What is difference between 5504 and 5040 models?

Ok, an update:

I just called Customer Service again, gave them the serial to my first unit...

CSR: "this unit has lifetime activation, sir"
Me: "Sweet." Gave them the serial to my second unit...
CSR: "this unit also has lifetime activation."
Me: *jumping for joy at work*

I just scored as well at Radio Shack. I just bought the floor model (with green sticker) in the Potrero, San Francisco Radio Shack. It is pre-activated. A 5040 model. It was on the shelf for $450, but I told him it would scan at $150. They were very nice about it in the store - they even spent some time cleaning off the display tape and wiping off the dust.

So far, so good. It's recording as I speak.

I am particularly pleased because I jumped as soon as I saw the deal, got my Amazon/TechDepot order in by 8am PST, then they sent me email around 12pm saying the order was cancelled.

So what's the difference between "red" and "green" sticker? Is this deal still alive?
Read that ReplayTV CSR are contacting all 'new' subscriber telling them they need to upgrade...

Where does it say this? Next to "Service" under System information?

anybody know if this means it's lifetime or 3 year service?

I don't remember if it said 'Service' next to it, but I pressed the Menu button, went to Setup, then System Information, and there it was.

anyone having problems getting theres to recognize their router? Mine prefilled in the standard 192-168.0.x and gateway as the router (192.168.0.1) and the DNS 0.0.255.255 or something, but then says cant connect. It worked when i unplugged and restarted the replay after connecting it straight into the cable modem.. There was one guy who asked that on the avsforum but never got an answer.. is there a particular DNS I should be connecting too or something? My computers have to problem recognizing internet immediatley with my netgear RT311 (?). Not much documentation out there for connecting to a router.

btw my 5504 says "not registered", so i assume im good to go with 3 years. I recorded some futurama and samurai jack last night. sweet.

Well, in St. Louis, the Circuit City's are out of stock online, and instore. Each store seemed to have one or two on 'on-line order hold'. I did Special Order one, though, so we'll see what happens. Also, Best Buy has these at $149 too, but all the area stores were out of stock (Carbondale Illinois showed 8 of them), and the 5080's all showed the $12.95 orange subscription sticker (and a much higher price). Just sharing my afternoon with those in the area, and keeping my fingers crossed.

I was one of those people in St. Louis with one online order hold

Got it last night about 8 p.m., hooked it up, and 3 years service included, no problems. Best deal I've heard of for a really really long time. Looks like it's pretty dead now, don't know where else you can find one, although some people said they're having luck with a different model at Radioshacks.

dr_willy: i had the same problem. turn off the unit (and unplug it). then try again. it worked the second time. you shouldn't need to change any network settings.

If you are search for a Radio Shack - Highlight to the right of each store number (it is hidden) to give you the quantity as of yesterday. The store I used had just my one in stock and it worked perfectly!!

Apparently, if you purchased it from Circuit City and it has a red sticker, activation is not included with the ReplayTV device. On the other hand, if your ReplayTV box has a green sticker on it, you're "golden".

Ok before I get too excited I also got a 5040 from RadioShack. There was a yellow sticker talking about activation... However when I went into the service menu there was no option to activate the unit. However on System Info the unit said inactive. I have not had the chance to hook it up to the internet yet but when I do will this get set for me?
Also I belive I am in a demo mode or something - it was a floor model? Is there a demo mode or have I just not hooked it up yet (I was in a real hurry during my lunch break)

Anyone want to give me the good news, or should I phone up customer service as ask how I go about activating the unit when there are no options on the Service Menu.

Thank you very much!

Shearo go to fatwallet and read their thread, I think you need to call the customer service center to determine if you have a subbed box or not..

Yes, there is a demo mode. I believe you have to punch in 3-8-2-Zones to get out of it. It will reset itself and once it updates itself through your Internet connection, hopefully, the status will be updated to "Activated (one-time fee paid)" or something to that effect.

All I can find on Fatwallet is a discussion on the unit, what forum should I be going to?

shearo, have you read this this thread yet? I posted the link in here yesterday to the FW discussion, as well as the one at AVS forums.

If the unit appears to be working fine (after getting out of demo modeA) I think you are already set up adn activated. When I called replaytv service activation contact she said everything was fien and I woudl be notified 3 years later. Also online it says that if your unit does not show a Service Activation option/menu then it is alreayd activated.

Got my at RS and although box gad a yellow sticker that said activation required it is already activated upon setup. I called and confirmed this and am good to go for 3 years. This may qualify as my deal of the year.

thanks sngryng, I hooked it back to the router while it was on last night but havent checked if it worked, it was prefilled in the settings though. The thing that bothers me the most will be the hassle of boxing it up and taking it back rather that losing out on the deal. I spent a good amt of hours worrying and purchasing and such that i wont get back and that irritates me
