So my voodoo 5 5500 died a while back(would not post/ no video), say like hmmm 5 years ago and replaced it with a gf 4 ti 4200. FF time to now, I bust out the card for a good cleaning so I could mount it on a plaque or something ( I'm the kind of loser who gets attached to nostalgic hardware like a top shelf 3DFX banger). Basically washed the card with isopropyl alcohol really not being careful at all but more focused on giving it a tedious cleaning. Just for giggles i popped the card in my p4 AGP rig and the ah heck posted!!!! Hardly able to contain myself I paniced and shut the PC off. I was in complete shock. I fired her up again and this time let it boot into windows. Needless to say I'm completely floored. This card has been tossed around in a box of junk for 5 years that I was constantly rummaging through and can vivdly remmember throwing the card around a few times. What should I do with it?? I'm pretty certain I'm going to leave the card in the p4 rig cause all that was in there before was a gf 2 gts. First off I need to get my hands on some drivers

My Ti4600 "died" for a couple years and sprung back to life under similar circumstances. Makes a nice card for the spare rig, but I'd rather have your Voodoo5.

I have a Voodoo 5 5500 64mb and 5000 PCI 64mb in my collection of parts...as well as a pair of Powercolor Voodoo 2' 12mb's, a Voodoo 3 2000 AGP and 3000 AGP, and a lowly Creative 3DFX Banshee PCI 16mb....I have this horrible habit of collecting old and interesting bits and peices.

all still work and I'm sure one day I put them in to a rig.

when I built my grandfather a 486DX2 "Solitare-Machine" i put in my old S3 Virge 4MB PCI card with the Creative Voodoo2 8MB in the AGP slot. i bet it still works.

also, if my friend were bothered to find it, i bet he still has his old Diamond 3DFX 4MB expansion card.

we used to play so much Quake 1 multiplayer with the 3DFX patch until Quake 2 came which in my opinion was the multiplayer PVP king of all time.

then my Computer became too slow for Quake 2 and i upgraded to an AMD Athlon 900MHz on an ASUS A7V with GeForce 2 GTS 32MB. that card was so awesome i used to stare at the T&L (i used to call it T&A) all day long.

bring back Psycho Dad! i mean...old days!

wasn't a GeForce 2 GTS faster than a v5 5500? I'm pretty sure it was.

Either way, the reason I wish I still had my Voodoo3 is for the old Janes Flight Sims I have. There is no substitute for GLide in a GLide native game. Every GLide wrapper I ahve tried has either not worked at all, caused the game not to load or produced graphical artifacts that made the game unplayable.

If you want to sell it, let me know.

Yes and No, at higher resolutions, 1024x768x32 and above the GTS is generally faster, but below 1024x768 or when using 16bit colour the Voodoo 5 was considerably faster...this was especially usefully when running games that supported glide as well as D3D or opengl, Glide always was faster because of the 16bit colour limitation...which didn't matter all that much back in 2000 when the Voodoo 5 was released.

Xp had drivers already for the voodoo, so i installed quake 3 last night and played through the first tier of the game. I think I'll be doing this for the next couple nights, retro gaming FTW!!

I still have my old canopus pure3d voodoo1 card. From where I'm standing now, it seems kind of amazing that it had 6mb of memory, 2mb "extra" from the standard 4mb part. It didn't even have a fan or heatsink on it.

I still have my 12mb V2 SLI. I am planning on putting together a legacy Win98se box as soon as I have all the parts for it. It's going to be my old school box for games like GLQuake, Q2, and Forsaken.

I still have my 3Dfx Voodoo5-5500 AGP. I swear that 3Dfx's RGSS was and is still the best quality AA I've ever seen!

I was originally in on Voodoo2 SLI back in the day; unfortunately, I could never get the second card to work, alone or with two, despite the RMA processes, so perhaps I just attempted to be in on the SLI goodness back then. I think that was in my P2-450 rig.

Old School SLI

You believe it's been 10 years since gamers were introduced to this in-game scene?

We have one of those too, but we use an Radeon 8500 in it, maybe i should dust off the ol' V5.
We still have a blast playing the old games at times.

My first video-card upgrade ever was a Voodoo2 12mb accelerator I put in my HP.

My mom bought me a Hewlett packard and refused to let me buy a gaming PC. She was like, "It's for school and I don't want you spending $1000 on computer stuff!"

I was so down because all my friends were playing Quake 3 Arena and I couldn't play it.

I tried everything. They had Glide wrappers back then, Direct 3d software mods. I tried so hard to get my computer to run the game at decent settings with playable frame-rates. Nothing worked. I was so depressed you guys have no idea.

Finally my friend was like, "You might not be stuck with integrated graphics. I have an old Voodoo 2 lying around, you put that in your PCI slot and connect it to your integrated card and it does 3d rendering by itself and your computer does all the 2d stuff.

I hooked it up (He sold me the card for $20, this was back when Quake 3 came out, what a deal I got) and low and behold, I was playing QUAKE 3 ARENA!

Man. 3dfx knew all the ways to a young boy's heart.

Forsaken!!! Bout time I found somebody else who played that game. I loved that game. Use to play it via modem to modem with my best bud. Hours and hours of hysterical fun.

There are still websites to get them and additional info from die hards:

Without starting a flame war, I think you've got that backwards.

It was nvidia that cared for the customers.

3DFx drove themselves out of business by refusing to keep up with the times. They tried to create a monopoly in the video card industry with GLide.

Nvidia were the ones that pushed the industry forward and made it what it is today.

If Nvidia had lost out to 3DFx, we'd be using video cards with 100 VSA-100 chips and still playing in 16bit color.
