I just decided to take 2x7800GT's opposed to a GTX512.
You get better performance for less money. It's better than a GTX512 and almost if not equal to 2xGTX's for $300 less.

video card politics... as with all politics im just worried about what will benefit me, myself, and I. Shorting production on the 7800 gtx 512mb leaves the mid-low end cards prices leveling out instead of dropping...

So i maybe see 7800gs deal or something along those lines to keep Nvidia's demand high before they convert to ATI.

You always limit your price searching to one store?
I care if it's OEM or retail and I'm sure many others do. Although I'm sure you don't care what kind of warranty it has, whether it comes with any games\software\connectors\ etc.

1 store selling a "bulk" card does not make the overall price.

If you don't care if it's OEM to save $50, why not save another $50 on top of that and get a full retail card with a lifttime warranty and performs about the same.

I think it is because we will be putting new heatsinks/waterblocks on those badboys anyways so OEM is fine as the warranty goes out the window
There is still only a 50 difference in price between the cards so it looks to me that ATI is back and very competitive in the upper end. (I have a watercooled 7800GTX at 521core and 1414mem before I am accused of being an ATI fanboi  )
The point is that the 7800GTX 512 is basically a false start that Nvidia "fans" should be bemoaning just like the ATI "product delays." Nvidia won this round but isn't going out with a bang.

Because everyone changes their cooling on their @500.00 vid cards. Yeah, not likely.
Both ATI and Nvidia should offer SUPER discounted cards with 5 minute warranties just for the sole purpose of selling to overclockers/modders. Because, well, like you said, they are not interested in warranties anyway right?

Believe it or not, there are other places besides newegg. Try the pricing engine on the front page perhaps.

A lot of those price searches return, refurbs, out of stock and dealers with a low seller rating.

Newegg is a store most people trust with reasonable prices.

I'm sure I could find much higher prices as well.
Newegg will charge more than MSRP for the newest, baddest video cards. The comment has merit that you should check elsewhere. That would include ZZF, Monarch, etc.

They were available at TD a couple days ago when Capt. Caveman bought his, they were available again this afternoon. (I followed his link and saw them in stock) They'll likely have more in a few days and they'll sell out too.

They're available at systems assemblers, some B&M, and overseas.

Extremely limited availability does not equal no availability, so you'll just have to keep listening to me say:

"Hey Munky! 512GTX is one sweet card that demolishes all competition, eh?"

I don't know Rollo. With the newest drivers the X1800XT looks to be pretty much on par with Nvidia's beast at max eye-candy. I trust X-bit labs and they have a pretty good review that compares the two.

You might want to check out the review too. I wouldn't say the 256MB 7800GTX and the X1800XT perform about the same. I'm not saying you should base everything off of one review but the results are very interesting, given the fact that they are using the newest drivers and they come from a reputable site.

WTH? Did I let a Rollo reply go for a whole day unanswered? Cant let that happen...

People are buying these: yes they are. Let's see what they say about it in a month.

fastest/best single card on the market by FAR: not by far. Certainly not in games like BF2, COD2, Quake4, SS2, Chaos Theory, and hey look - it actually loses in FEAR!

There's also an Asus 700mhz x1800xt. It's not available here, but it was officially announced, so it must just be "extremely limited availability", right? How will the 512gtx compete with that?

That article is a good read. Too bad they didn't turn all optimizations off for both sets of drivers, though.

That's rather a willful and intentional missing of the poster's point. The 512MB GTX is indeed faster in general; whether that justifies its current cost is up to the individual, but the performance differences between the two 512MB products are not as extreme as some would like to suggest.

It's not the same logic - Ati cards are worse in AOE3, which could either be a driver issue or just the way the game runs. In all those other benches the xt is way ahead of the gtx.

In fact, if you want to stretch that "logic" even farther, the x850xt pe is also faster than the 7800gt in a number of cases - does that mean it's a better buy than the gt?
