I don't mind the hunting aspect of it, but at the same time I feel like 'blunt trauma' on a reasonably large animal is not a particularly humane method to go about doing it. I feel like a gunshot to the same region would be more effective and allow them to not target juveniles so much.

Harp seals are currently estimated at approximately 7.4 million animals which is more than three times what it was in the 1970s.

Why are their numbers rising so sharply? Did we kill something that was eating them? Is global warming causing whatever they eat to flourish?

Sounds like they need to be culled in any case.

It's pretty sickening that this is still going on. It's so barbaric. At least some of the killers use guns now, but often the seals are shot in the body and left to die slowly. In often cases they're skinned alive. I don't know what's up with human nature and wanting to mass kill stuff.

Always avoid buying anything that may have fur on it, even if you think it's not real. Often it comes from operations such as this. Lot of it also comes from China where they skin dogs and cats alive too.

You walk up to them, they look at you in a worried way and maybe try to flop away, you bash them on the head.

maybe has something to do with decline in polar bear population and the general inability of the bears to get them, as their historical migration routes have broken apart.
