It's funny but when I said I hoped for a cheap dual core...

I believe it was Maximum PC... they stated something about "threadlocking", any dual core users here experience it? Kinda scarred me, won't go to dual core til I know its safe and consistent or my p4p800e-deluxe dies. I don't think I really even need it... and I use firefox and aim

Hyperthreading was over rated. Dual core is the realization of it. Get with it the world is NOT flat.

dual core CPUs are overrated.

I used to think that way too when i had my P4 3.0ghz cpu, but after upgrading last week to a 4600+ X2 dual core, i can now honestly say it's a huge difference.

I can actually do anything i want while i'm encoding a dvd which would have bogged my P4 down to a crawl before.

I have laptop with dual core, and hard drive (although it is 7200rpm) is such a bad bottleneck that kills that dual core advantage.

wow, way to go. That has to do with the fact that you're using a laptop, and I'm assuming a pretty cheap one at that. Not all processors are created equal and it holds true with dual-core as with single core. If you had a decent 7200rpm hd you it would not be bottlenecking you either. Stop trolling.

PS everything is going the way of dual-core so you better get used to it. And anotehr PS, last I checked two processors of equal speed with one being single core and one being dual core - which would be faster? oops!

duo core is great for windows use. playing back a hdtv 1080i/720p mpeg4 or h264 while doing something else is possible. with single core your system is mud. 99% of the time atleast for me i don't play games so big whup

the 7200rpm hd shouldn't bottleneck you unless you have a truely pathetic amount of ram a nd have to swap like mad just opening more applications to multitask. rams 2gb for 100 dollars these days.

what was the issue? i haven't experienced any trouble and a good portion of anandtech hardware users/gamers are already on multiple cores without issues.

2x Raptors 74GB and single core vs. dual core and 7200 rpm drive... guess what feels faster? and both are well maintained, under 30 processes running, plenty of RAM, etc.

Single Core is dead....

If you REALLY want to run things in "Single Core" mode, you can always just set processor affinity for your games, and devote only one processor to the game.

The single core is best for games argument pretty much ended once the price difference between single and dual core chips of the same speed went under $50

Multi-Core has totally changed the way people use their computer. People encode video files while playing videogames. They run Dual Monitors, play World of Warcraft on one and watch a movie on the other.

As time marches on, more and more games will be Multi-Core. All the more popular gaming engines have support now, or will have support soon for multi-core.

Single Core is dead.

I don't know which one feels faster, but I'm going to tell you that dual core is faster in more cases.

Hmmm...a bit of comparing apples to oranges? Your rig is fine as long as you can still use it for your apps. Why does multi-core future inevitability bothers you so much personally?

It's not a hot deal per se, and it certainly wasn't meant to be a hot deal thread, but it devolved into a flamefest
