If I returned my 9800 XT and got a 9800 Pro 256, put the VGA Silencer on it, and overclocked it to XT speeds, would there be any difference from the XT, except the fact that I would have a much more silent solution?

If your mem is same speed as XT then ur card is about the same if not faster (DDR2), unless the core on the XT is somewhat significantly better than the R350 core which I don't think so.

No, the XT would still be faster. The card & core have better architecture

i dont think it would be noticably faster. u would have to run benchies to determine the XT is slightly faster

Actually, as I recall, the tests showed that the 256mb R9800s were crippled by slow DDR2. It caused them to underperform the 128mb version in some test, and I believe the XT has nice fast DDR1.

Well Im left in a dilemma, Keep my 9800 XT and put up with the loud noise and heat or get a 9800 Pro and lose performance but get silence plus cool temps with artic vga silencer

My XT is actually very quiet ...

Get a VGA Silencer, borrow a dremel and get to work

Here are a couple of comments about my VGA Sliencer...

I took it apart today to see about removing the shim around the GPU. Decided not to though as the GPU is quite flush with the tope edge of the shim, I could tell the way the thermal paste was pressed.

I bridged the 1/4" gap at the end of the cooler with a thin piece of sheet metal, roughly 1" by 3", bent 3/4" in from each end. You can wedge it into the end of the cooler after loosening the screws holding it together.

Glad someone bumped this thread up. I had mine on order from SVC and they were supposed to ship my RAMSinks and VGA Cooler together when they arrived back in stock. I called to check the status and they hadn't shipped it yet. On the way now though. Will post before/after difference in core/mem speeds.

Most people remark about how easy it is.

I am very handy and found it a tad trickier than installing a HSF.

I think there is a link somewhere on this thread with a review and directions.

Hmm, I now have both the 9800np and the 9800pro fitted with this hsf and I didn't have to remove the shim on either one. Both cards have the gpu and shim at the same height and the HSF makes full contact with the core. I'm glad it's in stock again, because some friend's have asked me for them for quite a while..

Yea, my shim was same height as well.

What do you mean by shim??

In order to mount the VGA cooler, you have to remove the stock HSF, after you do that you see the GPU die is in the center of a shim that sits on the vid card to provide support for the HSF.

Some people had earlier reported that the GPU die was recessed lower than the shim, potentially limiting the contact between the GPU and the VGA cooler. Some people resorted to removing this shim to improve cooling with the VGA cooer.

People who find the shim to be the same height as the GPU die no tnot need to think about removing the shim.

Come on somebody post some real results that I know arnt a biased review 10 out of 10 stars or some crap.

Then you can illegally RMA your card? This might be funny on Tweak3d, because most of the people there agree with your ethics (or lack thereof) but recommending that other break the law will get you a vacation from Anandtech.

I doubt it. It's none of your business what they do with their cards

That's againts the FS/FT rules, and since you seem to be such rule nazi, you might want to consider not threatening people.

Thought you were a legit ATer too. You're on my DNT list. I mean, if you'd scam Bob the engineer at Asus by RMAing a card that you destroyed, and thus, Asus couldn't pay Bob enough money to have a nice christmas dinner, causing little Billy to go hungry, and without presents, how can I trust you as a trader? I mean, you do steal food from children's mouths, after all.

That's just how I see it. Stealing is stealing, plain and simple. BLACK AND WHITE.

Nebor i dont think id trade with you either, id ship you some memory and typo the tracking the number to you and you'd have the feds at my house within half an hour waiting to put me on trial.
