It's nearing time to make a 19" LCD decision

Pretty soon I'll be moving my computer setup from my basement office to my bedroom, at which time I'll be converting from a 19" and a 17" CRT to one 19" LCD. What do you think I should go with? So far my decision is the 1905FP, think this is a solid choice?

Also, the 1905FP is regularly $499 but has been on sale for $399 for a very long time. Now I noticed it's down to $349.30. Should I jump on this now before this deal disappears? Is there any chance it'll eventually go all the way back up to $499?

.............what if one say, yes you should go for 19"

and other one say, No, you should NOT go for 19"

then what are you going to do?

I think you are capable to see whether you really want a bigger screen or not.

That's not even what the thread is about, how about reading the OP next time.

The first question is what do you use it for? Games....Movies....Office Aps...etc.?

Dell generally has coupons every week or so that often make the 1905fp go below $300, check the hot deals section, don't ever buy something from dell without using the coupons they almost always offer. Also the way lcd prices have been falling I don't see it going back up to $500.

I picked up a 1905fp recently and have been testing it out over the last few days. It generally looks great, but I have been running a few tests with ghosting and I am not so sure it is the monitor for me. I hope to use it for a lot of gaming when I upgrade the rest of my computer soon, and I am thinking of trying out an lcd with a lower response time.

I will be using it for games and office apps/internet, etc. Not too many movies probably.

You've noticed ghosting? That could be a concern. Anandtech loved it, though.

Seems like one deal ended 4/18, but it looks like another goes until 4/27. Not too many people have posted in that thread, however.

I've never bought anything straight from Dell before. How do these coupon codes work? I know they are applied right at checkout but don't you have to earn or acquire them somehow?

You have to create a Dell account. Once you do that there is a section to enter coupon codes. Just cut 'n paste 'em in to the coupon code boxes. When you enter a product into your shopping basket any of the coupons you have entered will take affect if they apply and you should see the credits on your screen.

But how do you get the codes in the first place? You're not allowed to post them in Hot Deals, I'm assuming because only certain people get them legitimately. So how do you even come across them?

Yeah, there are other sites I looked at....just can't remember them. If you read the forums at fatwallet, you see links to other coupon sites, etc. I'm sure there are better coupon hunters here than me.

Well let's not get off topic here. Does anyone recommend another 19" LCD moreso than the 1905FP?

I have heard the 1905 has terrible ghosting, even just scrolling down web pages. I would recommend finding one with lower response time. I havent heard too many complaints about the Hyundai L90D+, and for what you seem to need it for it might be perfect.

It can be found for around 370 shipped.

well these two monitors would be worthwhile to check out:

NEC 1970GX
and
Samsung 930B

Both have 8ms response times and have been getting great reviews. If you're into gaming these are worth looking at. They are based on the same Samsung panel, but the NEC has the
"Opticlear" coating on the outside which (i've heard) makes the colours much more vibrant.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm surprised what you say about the 1905FP's ghosting. Anandtech loved it in the review. Something that terrible would definitely have been mentioned.

To be honest...I really don't notice any ghosting on the 1905FP. Maybe my eye isn't trained, but i consider myself a regular gamer, and the 1905FP has fulfilled my needs. Connected with DVI of course, maybe the story is different with analog.

I'm not saying there isn't ghosting, but I've been pretty heavily playing Painkiller on it (FPS) and it looks great to me. Other people have also commented on how good it looks during games.

FWIW.

Thanks!

I'm going to keep this bumped to see if we can get more input on this.

If you are not in too big of a hurry, and keep your eyes peeled, it's not too hard to snag one of the dell 20 inchers (either the 2001 with its 1600x1200 resolution, or the widescreen 2005) for less than $400. They are big AND fast, and no one complains about them ghosting, unlike the 1905.

If you play a lot of very recent games, as well as the quake3 or unreal based FPS games that can be tweaked to go widescreen, the 2005 is sweet.

I personally own LG's 1980Q, very sleek, very nice response time @ 8ms. A little pricier than what you are looking at, but for gaming it is about as good as I have seen. Only 1280 x 1024 native though, which was fine for me, because I have never been one of those people who wants to play doom 3 at 1600x1200. *shrugs*

I myself am looking at both Dells (1905fp and 2001fp). A friend has the 1905fp and does complain about ghosting so I'm leaning toward the 2001fp ... just waiting for it to come down a bit.

I'm down on some of the newly released 8ms monitors as far as not providing dvi cables and limited adjustability (i.e. 930B). And I'm leery of plunking down serious cash on a monitor with bad pixels as received (hence I'm staying away from the L90D+; have come across too many horror stories).

My LG came with both analog and DVI cables, is very adjustable, in both monitor and physical settings. As I said it was pricy approx 600 dollars, but so far I have been VERY pleased with it. Very noticable difference between analog and digital with it. I am just not a HUGE fan of dell. They give you some good prices, but I am just not thrilled with how they back up their products.

I'm amazed to hear about the ghosting with the 1905FP. How did that fact not work its way into Anandtech's review? But, because of all the reports, I suppose I may stray from that monitor.

The 2001FP would be awesome, but right now it's over $600 on Dell's site. Under $400? No way.

So if people complain about ghosting on the 1905, but the 2001's too expsensive, what to go with?

I found this program in a search, and I used it to test the 1905fp against my old 17" CRT

http://www.prad.de/board/thread.php?threadid=9546

The difference in the test where flags move across the screen and you can change the colors, showed very apparent ghosting. It just really concerned me as I intend to use this LCD for gaming when I get a new computer. I have no other flat panel comparison unfortunately, but my CRT did much better on the tests.

To be honest the computer I have currently isn't good enough to play any new FPS so I don't have any real world apps to test it out on.

I am in the same boat as you and I think I am just waiting for the next good Dell deal, the response time could be a bit better but I havent played any games in a while (Damn you college/beer) but have picked up the movie watching.

Also I really really like the design and features of the LG here on Newegg, the monitor/stand just looks sooo....sexy. Even though the swival options wouldnt be that useful to me it is kinda neat. Basically wherever you rotate the program adjusts the picture so its righside up. However LG is quite a tad bit more...so yeah I am getting antsy here, hopefully some deals will come within the next week so I can purchase this mofo
