You have to also consider the nostalgia affect. Many people would consider FF7 one of the greatest RPGs of all time, and there might be some credence to that for story alone, but if you judge it based on game play then its mediocre at best. I loved the BG series, as well as the first two fallout games, but I also know they they were games released in a sea of games and had their own problems. It's very easy to put games on a pedestal when they represent our youth, especially when it was accompanied by that wow factor. Both games in the Baldur's Gate series had many problems that were ultimately patched out, so I don't think its fair to make them seem like they are above criticism, except for Dragon Age which is obviously inferior (sarcasm). The thing is, many of the core BG fans have grown up, so it has become the standard "the <insert here> back then were way better than the <insert> today". The truth is that in every era some games suck, many are good, and a few really do it right.
Every gamer tends to find their "wow factor" in different places. What works for one won't necessarily work for another. Dragon Age is providing that wow factor to many younger games, and that is a good thing.
