Preview videos are meaningless. In these mmos I've found it all comes down to how it feels when you play it.

my bro is in the closed beta and I got to see it last night. Wasn't really able to play very long, but it looked very fun.

He had everything on 'low' and I'd say it looked about as good as wow, with better spell effects. It should look pretty damn good with higher settings.

My bro loves it so we'll see.

the population on 5 servers (for closed beta wave 3) during peak time is about ~2000 people per server. destruction is the most popular, and not only that. of all the RvR games that i've played (on either side), destruction won most of the time.

Because nobody has ever screwed up so big so many times.

You obviously haven't played AoC, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, did not witness the CU and NGE nerfs done to SWG or read about Dark and Light.

whatever happened to Dark and Light, I remember back when I was a 60 druid that this was all the talk and people jumping ship to join D&L

for those of you who didn't get into the CE closed beta, the free preview weekend invites just went out for this coming weekend. this should've automatically go to the CE preorders who didn't get in, and the first 50,000 SE preorders. good luck.

also NDA goes away today. prepare for lots of youtube video.

On the G4 news scrawl last night it had "open beta opens Sept 7, a measly 11 days before the opening date".

Is there a torrent to download the open beta? My PC keeps crashing (damn nvidia sata drivers) and fileplanet isnt letting you resume the download.

It joined the epic fail train.

If the beta is any indication then Destruction is going to be more populated (kinda figures that anyway).

Do unbalanced populations really screw with the RvR? I'm wondering if playing the underdog is going to mean getting completely dominated a lot of the time.

Well, in DAoC, unbalanced pops really did screw up RvR. But, it was more fun, and a lot more action being the underdog. Also better RPs

In the final game probably not.
Since the RVR zones do have a population limit per side.
Right now in beta there a lot of people playing destruction.
With 2300 people on the server the population was split 965 order to 1335 destruction.
That isn't really because destruction is more powerful , its just people wanting to play those type of characters.

So what is happening a lot in beta is that on a 18vs18 RVR, order might have 9 and destruction might have 14. So of course that makes them usually win.

Sweet jesus... September 7th?! Ridiculously late for open beta. About a week and a half of open beta before the product releases. Sounds like they are trying to keep as few as people on the 'in' on what this game is like. I really want to know how it plays, because I'm interested as long as it's not a carbon copy of WoW. But I don't want to pay $50 to find out during the free month that I hate it. Might have to put $5 down on pre-order just so I can get a 'trial' during the open beta.

The open beta is only for stress test. The game has been in closed beta for over a year. The major issues are fixed, its just the little things like spelling errors, landscape tweaks, etc that are left.

It is definitely not a carbon copy of wow.

That's good to know.
Hopefully a lot more comes out, and some gameplay videos soon with the NDA done with. Hopefully they have a trial when the game is officially released, like a free week or something. I'm definitely interested, but whether or not it can hold my interest and the play style is something I enjoy remains to be seen. I'm extremely picky in my MMO experience, and nothing has really been gripping for me.

Are there "grinding" elements in the game?

PVP: Is RvR exciting and challenging and can lower levels contribute?

Leveling: How's the quest system and can you level from killing players? Is leveling even as important as in EQ and WoW?

How important is player crafting?

Are the classes unique?

Are tanks like the Black Orc class useful in RvR/PvP?

Grinding...no not really. You can level from PQs, quests, RvR...you have ton's of choices on how you want to level.

The quest system is awsome, it shows you where to go and what you need to do. You can stop by PQs doing quests and you have a chance to get some good loot and you get influcence items also from PQs.

Crafting I cant answer very well.

The classes are very unique between each other in the same realm, there is usually a semi similar counterpart on the other realm.

Black Orcs are good in PvP as they are the front man and can take a beating. One on one maybe not, but grouped with a healer and they are good. Long term it is hard to tell at this point.

RvR is fantastic. Genuinely. You can tell this is the same crew that did DAoC. For some reason, it just feels fun. I can't really quantify it, I can just say that I'm having the same fun RVRing in WAR as I did in DAoC.

The quest system is great. Your quests are kept in your Tome of Knowledge (ToK) and also on your map, for easy access. Instead of an exact location, each quest puts a red border on your map, indicating where the quests objectives are (within that border). The XP from RVRing is great and I've leveled up a few times solely from RVRing.

I've only dabbled in crafting and even then they only have three of the crafts in game at the moment. Cultivating is kind of neat - you get a special screen that has slots for the seed, water, soil and nutrients and you have to add each of the items at timed intervals to grow your seed into a finished plant, which is then (I assume) used for potion making. It's a neat idea.

The classes are very fun - I'm playing a Witchunter atm which is similar to a Rogue in WoW in that they have a combo point-esque system but different in that they have ranged abilities with their pistol, as well.

As far as Black Orcs go, I hate them. They never seem to die and always beat my face in so yeah, I assume they're at least viable.

Another thing I really like is a pretty specific one. Lots of games have had detaunts to use in PVE but the detaunts in WAR, in RVR, cause the player you use it on to do less damage to you over a set period of time. A simple idea but I think it works really well.

So tanks aren't completely neglected in PvP? I understand that they can defend choke points because of the collision detection, but in the absence of a choke point are they just stuck doing mediocre damage?

Are healing classes relatively powerful like in WoW?
