Well, like I said, I wouldn't know about those because I just load up whatever songs I want directly from explorer.

Same here. I have most of my music on CDs. The songs I don't have (less than 50) I load from explorer, or from Winamp with the Open button.

I grade media players based on how they play media and not how they organize them. Explorer does a fine job of organizing them for me.

They all seem to do a pretty equal job of just playing an MP3 to me. If I want to find a song in WMP or iTunes, I can jsut type the first few letters of it's name into the search box. If I want to find it in winamp, I have to scroll through over 1000 songs and look for it.

Then I don't think you are familiar with the jump function. Press J and type the name of the song. Fast and easy.
Edit: Too damn late ... hehe

Yeah, but in WMP you can type "red hot chilli peppers" and it'll select all your chilli peppers MP3s, then if you hit "next" it skips to another chilli peppers song. All winamp does is find the location of one song.

I use Winamp3 and it works very nicely thank you.

Otherwise I am still with WMP 6.4 for videos, unless I happen to need a video playlist which is so rare that all I have is WMP 7 and I see no reason to get the 9er whatsoever for the simmple reason WMP 7 and above = bloated, cumbersom, SLOW (you can't play a divx file without jitters on a 400 MHz P2 with WMP 7+ whereas with WMP 6.4 there are no problems)

It's official? I guess WMP would be a better mp3 player for those who have absolutely no idea about where they've stored music files.

Winamp 2.81 gets my official vote.

Anyone else experience this?

Yep, I have this problem on my work computer, running wmp9 in windows 2000. Wmp9 at home in Windows XP doesn't, though. What OS are you using?

Running XP pro on a p4 2.7ghz with 512mb

WMP loads just slightly slower than Winamp 2.81 for me but both are still almost instant, and I'm using a laptop with a 4200 RPM hard drive. The task manager also shows WMP using less memory and about the same CPU utilization when playing an mp3. I think it depends on the skin that you choose for WMP. I'm assuming a larger and fancier skin would take up some more memory and some skins show the Visualization stuff while others don't.

I still use Winamp though because it's a lot smaller, taking up less of my precious desktop real estate. I use WMP for my video files and CD's.

I remember a while back a lot of people clamoring about how great the Divx Playa was because it "looked" so compact and "efficient". I did the same comparison using the Task Manager and I found that the Playa took up almost twice the amount of memory compared to WMP. It also crashed a lot for me. The only plus was that it could play certain movies that WMP couldn't.

Winamp3 in my mind sounds inferior (sound quality) to WMP 9. But, when your playing games, running Winamp at under 1% cpu usage compared to like 20% to 30% cpu usage, makes quite a big difference.

To some of my friends, this skin (Click Here To See It) changed the mind of plenty of my friends. I think the choice has partly to do with the presentation or in this case the skin itself. WMP 9 is now also implementing some features where it is starting to recognize which files you downloaded illegaly and which ones you bought.

Winamp gives more plugin capability, skins, add-ons, etc. Check out their website at www.winamp.com

I like Winamp3 so much better. It is more efficient in terms of memory usage, and I really like the interface. I have just gotten too used to it. Plus, I don't like using more MS software than I have to. =)

Winamp feels quicker and more simple & convenient for me, but i use WMP9 to play cd's. Not exactly a "power user" or whatever though. Wimamp 2.81 does .ogg, havent found a plugin for WMP9 to do .ogg yet.

dont see the point in "best" app, surely its simply personal preference?

Since I've moved to Windows XP I've been using Windows Media Player for my MP3s and it works great. Plus it seems to support visualisations and skinning technology much better than WinAMP 2xx does.

WMP9 has a much better library than either version of Winamp, but the DRM stuff keeps me away. The only reason I'm using it now is because I'm too lazy to install Winamp yet.
