The first day after quitting, you have a hangover; easy to "quit."
The second day after quitting, you have The Guilt and The Determination; easy to "quit."
The third day after quitting, you have The Headache...you may fail...you may go to Day 4.
The fourth day after quitting is the hardest. You have The Thirst, The Headache and The Denial...good luck.

not work or school but i am testy and short tempered with family or friends (before I have a few)

Then it's definitely a problem. You should probably seek some kind of therapy or AA if you don't mind the religious aspect of it.

AA neither promotes or endorses any religion.

None, specifically, but the steps do involve accepting the existance of God. Which God that is isn't necessarily the same for everyone but it is a religious belief.

A belief in a "higher power" is a large part of the program. "God" is quite often perceived as "Good Orderly Direction" or a "Group of Drunks". All that is asked is that a person is willing to accept help from a power greater than themselves, i.e. a "higher power".

I don't want to argue semantics so let me just rephrase:

AA should be considered if you don't mind the spiritual aspect of it.

Why even waste the money on the fruity additives for your cocktails? :Q

That is great news. All kidding aside, my father died at the age of 63. Being an alcoholic for the 2nd half of his life eventually claimed his life. In the period of 6 weeks from the onset of visible sickness, I watched his health degrade on a daily basis until his death.

Although you more likely came to brag about your "18 pack a day":

Alcohol is a funny thing in that addiction seems to only strike some heavy users. The question is can you go a day or two without it? If not it would be wise to seek help even though you think it is just stress relief. Alcoholism isn't defined by how much you drink but of course your dependency on it. While I have no problem knocking back a case or so and doing it for several days in a row and then not touch alcohol for months (sometimes years) I've seen many of my friends fvck up their lives because of it. You said today was day one. If you aren't wishing you had a beer in two days don't worry about it and switch to something with fewer calories. If in two days you are wishing you had a beer you need to talk to someone. Note this is something you should do periodically. Doing it once over a lifetime of drinking is not proof you aren't an alcoholic.

At least PowerMac4Ever doesn't get on your case about it. And I'm not even an alcoholic.

Here is your cure:

I'm assuming you're drinking pisswater pseudobeer, because I can't imagine drinking any quality beer in such irresponsible quantity. Start drinking quality beer, develop an affinity for it, and you'll find that it's impossible for you to go back to the pisswater. The quality beer is likely more expensive, and so you won't just chug down 18 cans/bottles/whatever like you do now.

Learn to respect a quality beer and you won't abuse it, imo.

If you only think you're an alcoholic, you're not... Anyway, you do need to stop drinking that much beer - don't get me wrong, beer has its well-deserved place, but 18 a day is a desperate cry for stronger stuff. Beer in that quantity usually results in a muddy high, ~1/3 of which is spent in the bathroom pissing. It also has a ton of calories. Personally, I prefer straight tequila, but it's up to you to decide on your own poison preference.

How did you do?

If you plan to start drinking again, switch to premium 100% agave tequila, sipped from a snifter glass (or regular short cocktail glass, or in a pinch even a wine glass). Maybe set a maximum # of drinks before you start drinking.

Wow. What an incredibly f8cking inappropriate post.

"I'm not really concerned about your alcoholism, nor do I really understand this condition, but I'd like to take this opportunity to e-pimp my Xtreme knowledge of premium 100% agave tequila."

I am somewhat of a problem drinker myself. I still drink around a six-pack a day but it's Coors light so I really don't feel too bad about it. Since you are going cold turkey for a while I would recommend when you do start drinking again to go for darker beer. It is a lot harder to chug and because of that you will see a dramatic decrease in the amount you drink. I can easily substitute 3 Mirror Ponds for 6+ Coors. I would recommend also to carry a water bottle around with you. Half the problem for you is probably some type of oral fixation. My favorite way to get through a day without drinking is to play Civilization. I can sit there for hours playing that without even thinking about that frosty beverage given to us by god.

Chill out there bud. I am concerned. But if you actually read this whole thread, several other people did the exact same thing. ie. "Try to go off it for awhile and if you can do that, but then *want* to continue drinking, switch to something besides beer.". The guy's not gonna start/keep drinking because I tell him to.
I don't see how it could possibly e-pimp my knowledge since if you look, my other thread was mainly asking a million questions!? Seems I've seen other threads where you accuse people of e-pimping.?

Give it a couple more years and we'll talk.

Yeh, it's true OP.. pretty much if you're able to stop at an 18 pack, you're likely not an alcoholic, but I couldn't stand pissing that much. I'd switch to hard liquor.
