So I've been seeing that around lately... people arguing for genetics and other reasons that cause gayness and basically there's nothing they can do about it. It's not their fault, so it's ok to be gay.

Where the hell did this stuff come from ? Is this the new wave of no-reponsibility arguments (with Hollywood is making me gay lawsuits), or just a an attempt ot make being gay socially acceptable?

I'm sorry, but if you're gay, there is something wrong with you. You are unhealty and will die sooner than average. And genetics or not, your most likely to get aids.

Now the above is not a knock against gays, so much put your banning ways away.

It's about the fact that people love to find someone they can ridicule when it has nothing to do with them.

It's exactly the same.

yea, because gay people take up 2 spaces in the movie theatre, airplain seats, and the subway.

yes, because gay people need more health care than straight people, raising health insurance costs for everyone.

yea, because gay people can get off their lazy asses and go to the gym, and do cardio, and also go on a diet, and become straight from that.

yea, i see how they are exactly the same ...

No it's not about them, it's about you. Want to not be gay? Don't have sex with men.

Fat people have no real effect on me, nor do gays. I don't come here and ridicule either. You pick one. Maybe you pick both.

Nice change of culture here BTW mods.

did you miss my 2 examples of how it affects me?

i don't want to be cramped in a seat due to them being fat, nor do I want to pay more in healthcare costs due to them being fat.

Why can't you move to another seat? Or find a job that makes individuals responsible for their own health care, and in doing so unhealthy people will pay more for it?

Just like fat people can make a choice, so can you.

It would be nice if people were healthier in America though. Less strain on healthcare

Nah, fat people tend to die faster and thus less strain on healthcare and social security. People tend to get sick at old ages no matter what so dying sooner would be less of a strain on healthcare.

IMO, Obesity and AIDS are both big problems in America.
As is our love for complaining about both and doing nothing for either.
I am guilty of this myself.

It really is striking. I saw more obese people in 15 minutes at the Philly airport than in the previous 10 days wandering around Rome.
You tend to walk your ass off in Rome, that helps a lot

I think we in the USA could get away with a lot of our food mistakes (OK gluttony) if the majority of our cities weren't so dysfunctional in terms of layout and transportation, particularly the unsafe conditions most pedestrians/cyclists face in most cities. Activity level has just gone into the toilet in this country, I wonder what would happen if people had to expend 600-800+ cal per day to get their asses to their destinations.

Are you kidding me?.... Ummm, obese people are the largest users of prescription drugs and healthcare in this nation. Old people take a large percent, but not as much as obese people.

Yeah, agreed. In other words...

It would be nice if people didn't smoke, drink, take illegal drugs, or in most cases (exclusions being those with Bipolar I and whatnot, obviously) take legal drugs (including OTC stuff, yes). It would also be nice if people balanced their diets as carefully as possible taking into account the many different types of carbohydrate mixtures, fatty oils, and micronutrients down to selenium. Furthermore-- ooh, here's a BIG one-- people should stop using antibiotics (including antibiotic hand soap) unless prescribed by a doctor, and then only EXACTLY as prescribed. While we're at it, no one should have sex unless they're specifically trying to make a baby. And we shouldn't use computers for more than an hour a day.

I know that you personally aren't making any arguments against the existence of fat people or whatever, of course. I'm just trying to detail for others exactly what it would mean for us to be healthier, all with decisions we could all choose to make.

He is probably right. It is a stat like most auto-pedestrian accidents happens at marked cross walks. While absolutely accurate, it tells us nothing. For a statistic to have any meaning it must have context.

Lack of physical activity and increase in consumption of processed foods are the reasons we have so much obesity in this country.

In response to the OP:
People don't want to take responsibility. Why worry about your weight now when you can have medication prescribed to deal with the inevitable heart conditions, joint pain, high cholesterol, diabetes (adult onset), etc? Why spend 50$ and hour with a trainer who can change the rest of your life when you can pay 20$ for a generic brand of prescription 10 years from now to "offset" the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle? People don't put any value on a higher quality of life. A lot of people want to blame genetics. Genetics don't play such a huge a part in 35% of this counties population being obese (not overweight, but obese). Although I think the real percentage is different (they used BMI to declare obesity and I believe they didn't take into account body fat, which obesity is something like > 30% for males and X% of pounds)

I think it is an effort at making being fat socially acceptable. Did you know that they widened the seats at the new mile high stadium by over 3 inches? And Denver is supposed to be one of the fittest cities.

Not everyone is the same way.

She's either:

a) not burning more calories than she takes in on a daily basis
b) lying about 1000 calorie per day intake

it's simple, really

Yup, but if she is older then that means her metabolism has basically set. She is probably very sedentary (maybe due to the cancer maybe not). The only way is to pick up her activity. But since she is older, it doesn't matter as much. When you are around 70-80, unless you are in good shape, having a little fat on you is good, prevents serious injuries from falling over.

Yup

That is not true. There are conditions where a person's body will actually starve to death instead of burn fat. As I said before, this is a rare condition but it does exist.

Don't forget that some women have thyroid disease that makes it difficult for them to lose weight and maintain it unless they eliminate a lot of foods in their diet... My sis has that, and she's scared of gaining weight (she's around 128 lbs ATM).

My aunt had Thyroid cancer, and she had to have part of it removed. She had metabolism problems as well, but she takes care of herself and she is just as skinny as before.

Obese people tend to be malnourished. Ironic considering how much they eat, but it's usually all the wrong stuff.

Top that with the stress that the weight has on your body, and it's a deadly combination.

My mother blames her obesity on thyroid problems, but everytime I'm home she has ice cream and brownies/cake for desert. She also drinks red wine because it's healthy. I try to tell her that eating grapes or taking resveratrol supplements does the same thing without the body fat, but she doesn't listen.

I'm not saying that people with geniuine problems don't exist, but I've yet to meet someone and see their diet reflect it. If I ate like these people did, I'd be obese too.
