Eh. They've been on a downward trend lately. The 840 (non-Pro) has been $280 before. Before that, it was $295 a few times. Now it's $280 a few times. Give it a month or two, it'll probably be $250. At that price, I think the inherent limitations of TLC will be moot given the sheer cost per gig.

At this price, I just know it'll go lower.

That's a fluke thing. I'm talking about consistently on sale at this at various retailers. It's been dropping steadily.

I thought the same thing originally, but only because it's 1/3 of the 3,000 or so that the 830's had. When you think about it though, most people on a site like this will be putting OS, apps, and games/steam on the SSD, while the movies, music, etc, will go on a HDD. 95% of the data on the SSD will never change. Even if 50% of the files change a few times per month, which is highly unlikely, your talking about 36 p/e per year. In 3 or 4 years we'll be purchasing 2TB SSD's for $200, so I just really don't see this being an issue.

If you were to dedicate most of the drive to a large SQL/Oracle/Exchange database, then that would be a problem. But that's not going to happen with these consumer level SSD's.

I jumped on the deal at macmall for 2 x 250GB 840's for $149 each + $100 restaurant.com gift card with each SSD (they might still have that deal - haven't checked). Assuming you can make use of restaurant.com in your area, and you actually eat out once in a while, you can grab 500GB RAID 0 for the equivalent of $100.

Yup, by the time these cells reach their limit, 1TB SSDs will be $150 or even less. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the benefits!

Just increase its reserve capacity but not partitioning a portion of it.
It's what I did to the last ~25.7GB of my 500GB 840.

Another Fluke Thing: The 500GB 840 Pro was $279 @ Newegg for a short while too....and I missed it. Watched for days to see if it would come back in stock under the promotion. Never did!
