Michael Angelo Batio is the one and only, truly complete guitarist. He can play equally well both left and right handed, on a quad neck guitar. That's like, 4 guitars.
that just sounded like a bunch of notes played fast. totally void of emotion and doesn't touch you at all.
here's a video worth watching

Agreed. Here's the same song with Petrucci: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtAnOuxp17c&feature=related
Excellent technical skills, but lacks the same emotion in the music. Gilmour can send chills through your body with his playing. I'm not trying to say that Petrucci isn't incredibly skilled, but he over relies on that skill without putting the emotion into it as well.
Meh, it's just 9 minutes of insane jamming with no lyrics. What's the point? Lyrics make rock music...unless you're a meth addict this "experiment" is full of fail.
Brian May was on Fresh Air today (I had no idea the dude now has a PhD in Astrophysics! :awe, but he's of the opinion that the only thing that matters in a song is the singer. He's not one for guitarists, apparently. :hmm:
Odd, I thought, as I've always felt otherwise....but he's been a bit spoiled, methinks.
well it's like that but you have the added effect of being given the golden paint brush infused with the emotion of a million souls, from God himself. it sounds different..
You must have no musical ability
Nice track :^)
Ehh, I'm certain that Petrucci is a better player, but I prefer Akerfeldt or Steven Wilson, as I see them as better composers.
lolz. srv, clapton, knopfler, hendrix, atkins, bb, may, and gilmour are complete guitarists, not this fingertapping arpeggio i-wouldn't-know-a-melody-if-it-butfucked-me bullshit.
If you used that description to describe David Gilmour, I would agree with you
Petrucci is an amazing guitarist, but there isn't anything unique to his writing or playing ability. He has incredible chops and tone, but there are a million other guitarists that have that too. Dream Theater's song writing, while extremely technical, has never had a lasting impression on me. I never got the Dream Theater hype and I consider myself a huge progressive rock fan.

Fuck you. You make it sound like John Petrucci is conceited and implies his abilities make him better than the others you've described. He's a humble dude doing what he loves and is actually good at it. And what the fuck are you talking about him "not 'knowing' a melody." A melody is a series of musical notes which is perceived as a single entity. There's no reason to shit on a respected guitar player just because you have different (and might I add severely mainstream) taste.
