When I was in grade school (the 80's) there was a concerted effort to "teach" kids to recycle. We only heard the Sierra Club side of the argument for recycling, which has the effect of brainwashing. As far as recycling, watch the Penn & Teller BS episode if you think it is actually doing any good.

The BS ep on recycling centered on the profitability of recycling programs and the scare of running out of landfill space. Aside from paper recycling, I don't think they made any points about negative or negligible environmental effects of recycling. So it does cost money, but there are some environmental benefits. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Mostly correct, the only material that makes financial sense to recycle is aluminum (value of aluminum outweighs the cost to recycle them). That's why you see homeless people collecting cans (because somebody will pay them money for them.) Why should we spend a few billion dollars of our tax dollars just so we can feel good about recycling?

And people steal power and phone lines for copper. And people used to steal bronze fire hydrant caps (before they changed the material) around here. There's a story of a railroad that changed all of thier copper lines to fiber, sold the copper, and came out ahead.
