Competitive cheerleading is a sport. Sure.

Cheerleading where they just jump around, waving pom-poms, and getting everyone to repeat some dumb chant where they spell a teams name letter by letter - not a sport.

This. I think when competitive cheerleading becomes more ubiquitous and organized it may become classified as a sport, but until that day .. it simply isn't.

Yet no one notices that it's an AP article posted on Fox's site. I wonder if all the other outlets that picked it up are getting the same treatment.

FTA: "It's about the spirit of the law and it's about providing real opportunities for women..."

Then why does Title IX compliance mean a school can cut it male athletic programs until there are equal amounts of women athletes and male athletes?

Cheerleading is 10 times the sport that soccer is.

How about this: sport is something where there is a clearly defined winner and loser. In Basketball, the team with most points wins. In racing, the first car across the line wins. Things like cheerleading and figure skating are total bullshit because the winner is decided by a bunch of bribed judges.

Biking isn't a sport, but bike racing is?

I'm betting one court has higher authority on deciding the manner than the other though.

Its not about higher as much as it is totally different cases.

1 is over funding and equal treatment the other over weather they can sue. The problem is people take 1 line and try to tie them together, kinda like Fox reporting about that evil "racist" Sherrod without doing any real reporting.

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

Lol fishing and hunting there... Let's also include watching TV and drinking beer! They require as much physical prowess as gaming, and far less skill. Even racing and golf require more physical prowess

They certainly put a ton of work into their routines

Besides, they televise on ESPN, so it must be a sport!!

Hmm good point. Maybe it needs to be a bit more ultimate. Keep it going until someone gets knocked down or someone calls it quits.

I think some did that in older days of boxing. But it turned out many kept going till someone got really injuried or died from head injury.

It seems to work pretty good in UFC though. Guy gets a hardcore choke hold, realizes he's in trouble, taps out.

If boxers can't figure this out, that's not my problem

Yeh, isn't it awful that they have to spend equally on male and female sports?

When demand is unequal, and the fact is some male sports pay for themselves and the others as well, its not at all an equal situation, in many cases the demand for the "equal" sport is so low they have basically no standards. its a big joke.

BIG Differance between brain injury and being choked. Some boxers even after just half a dozen rounds can;t even remember their name, let alone know they are in trouble.

UFC has the advantage that most don;t sit there and try to hit each other in the head. They have other options and are allowed to kick as well.

I'm no authority, but I've always kind of associated the word sport with an activity that allows you to stop your opponent from scoring.

Plus maybe golf.

Look at martial arts. In sparring you can keep your opponent from scoring, but since I've done martial arts it automaticly disqualifies it as a sport.

Although not without some issues, an equalizing mechanism was necessary to ensure women have equal opportunity.
