I've heard criticism - that his stuff is a bit generic - but honestly, it's so well done I don't really give a shit.*

*Classically trained musician. I respect craftsmanship more than originality.

For some reason I never liked the Disturbed cover much. Probably too much a fan of the original.

Slight left turn...OP, this is an amazing live acoustic cover of this song as well. The song is just a good song in general, but few people can pull it off. The chorus...just wow. On the opposite side of the spectrum, but this guy does some really good acoustic covers.

Ok so i wanted to say that "most metal covers are just the same song with a distortion pedal and double kick".

Now, Leo is the epitomy of the non-metal metal cover, and considering how much people here like him, im not sure how well this'post gon'go down.

The thing is, metal is based on different intervals, so unless you already got a shitton of minor chords in there, no amount of metallizing-beam can turn a non-metal song into metal.

It does work great the other way around tho.

Yea, covers are a funny thing. Not all are good, and I tend not to like most that just 'do it like the original did it' but at the same time, there's making it so obscure it loses what made it a good song to begin with, and then there are those that absolutely blow the original away (my example would probably be Manson's Sweet Things, even though I'm sure many would argue that one). There are plenty of 'heavy down tuned covers of pop songs that have basic cookie monster vocals and they may be fun for a few listens (Psycostick as an example), they don't really elevate the song to new levels. My fascination with Leo is twofold. First, he plays and produces it all...I wish I was that talented. Secondly, he actually rewrites breakdowns (granted it is...mostly standard djent type faire - but it's something). He also has a knack of getting his production vocals to sound very similar to the original singers in many songs.

David Bowie once said ... paraphrasing .. that we are just as talented as those we think are great.
Being "great" isnt terribly hard. Producing and writing your own music isnt hard either - it's actually a lot more mundane than you'd suspect. I would add that all the singing and dancing bs that make music marketing are there to try to convince you these people are somehow better than you, and you owe them something, but in reality you owe them no respect other than the one they have actually earned.

And then theres people who are just ... different. Like Arlo Guthrie, or Buckethead, or Paul Gilbert ... and we're not even talking about classical players, or even worse, jazz players.
