iTunes and album art

When I copied all my music from my PC to my new Mac, a lot of (maybe all) the album art that I manually installed was lost.

How do I install album art in a more permanent way so that, say, if my Mac dies, I do not have to recreate all my work yet again on the next computer?

I thought that's what iTunes did. I added artwork to all my MP3s through iTunes (manually) and they were stored in the ID3 tag.

In my case, it worked exactly as described in the link, when I imported my mp3 library, iTunes went out and downloaded the artwork that was available, but, the artwork was not embedded into the id3 tag.

I believe older version of iTunes did do this. Newer ones definitely don't. I have a PC and it writes the cover art to my documents and settings\users\appdata\itunes directory. Not sure where it does it on a Mac, but I'm sure the process is similar. It's frustrating that iTunes doesn't embed the covers. I'm sure there are programs that will automatically do it for you based off what it finds in iTunes.

I find that it embeds them if you yourself add it to "Artwork" tab in iTunes, but I don't know why Apple didn't make iTunes do that by default when it grabs them from the iTunes store. It's odd, and stupid to not embed them.

If the song or songs have artwork already, run this script. It will embed it into the ID3.
