One of these download music sites needs to have a format option.

Personally I'd like my music in Ogg format, as it's superior quality. I'd settle for MP3 I guess, but I'd never touch WMA/AAC (don't want copy protection/DRM).

I'd actually like a lossless format (CDDA/.wav) so that I could convert it to whatever format I like, depending on which player I'm using
(iPoo prefers AAC, DVD only does MP3, iRiver can do Ogg, HiFi only does CDDA....)

And personally I can't think of a more awful way to transfer files to your music player than via Musicmatch/iTunes etc. What's wrong with drag'n'drop to a drive icon?

Don't even get me started on how stupid using iTunes to burn a CD is!

iTunes is not my cup of tea. Resource usage is high, and it doesn't match my XP visual style.

Apple's store-bought AAC has a limit of 3 computers, and unlimited burn. Of course, what you rip yourself doesn't have any limits...

anyone have a problem with itunes being really slow after keeping it minimized and not in use? when i leave it minimized and then try to maximize it after a couple of hours, the program acts like it's frozen. takes a few seconds for it to come back and maximize.

How long does it remain "slow"? Does it behave normally after a minute? It's possible that most of the program is being swapped out to virtual memory and it's just taking a minute to come back 'online'. A really good indication of that would be if your HD is going nuts at the same time that iTunes is "slow".

I filled my 160GB media server with APE files. Media Jukebox is my preferred player...nevertheless, Itunes seems to be "head & shoulders " above MusicMatch for content and accessibility.

Just my first impression with both.

I think the problem is that too many young people are accustomed to paying these outrageous prices for music and so they don't think anything of paying $0.99 per track. I'll never pay that much, but would pay $0.20 per track.

And the relevance is???

Outrageous prices??? 45's were $1 a pop. Yes, that's for 2 songs, but the other side usually wasn't that good anyway, plus vinyl does wear out.

AAC and WMA are two entirely different animals, don't lump them together. WMA is a purely proprietary format, AAC is actually standards based.

And AAC really does seem to offer you better quality for a given file size (or same quality at smaller file size) than even the best MP3s.

If all the hardware you're playing the files on can handle AAC, it's worth considering for the stuff you rip. Though if you want to use the files on multiple hardware players, then the convenience of ripping and encoding once to MP3 will outweigh the additional file size.

I did keep quicktime since I didn't have it install on my pc yet.

Just saw this thread. Posted this new thread yesterday asking what to do with an MOV file I have on a music CD. Answer = install Quicktime, and was provided the link. Installing Quicktime for Windows 2000 nowadays seems to be a matter of also installing iTunes, and I had absolutely no idea what it is and still have virtually no idea. I was able to play my MOV file, but was far from pleased since even at double size it only uses around maybe 8% of my screen real estate, WTF? The install is idiotic in the extreme. I wanted Quicktime, period, and the install comes off as an install of iTunes, period. I stopped the install and went back to the site to make sure I had the right file. When I was satisfied that the jokers who designed this thing actually included Quicktime I completed the install. I've always hated Quicktime and always had trouble with it going back almost 10 years, but there seemed no other way of getting to view that MOV file, if you can call squinting at a 3" x 3" box on my 22" monitor, "viewing."

PS. I installed this stuff opting to NOT associate any files with these applications. I'll continue to use Winamp 2.80, etc. Just disabled the Quicktime and iTunes stuff from launching at startup.

hmm, how much did a gallon of milk cost in the 50s? How much did a gallon of gas cost in the 50s?

milk? Probably a buck fifty, but I don't think they sold gallons of milk in those days.
gas? Probably 30 cents.

Muse, that was probably the most worthless rant I've ever heard. Did you ever try www.quicktime.com? That huge link in upper left hand corner, for some reason it says "Download the free player." Hey, what's that, it doesn't come with iTunes? WOW! Also, you ever think that that movie on the cd might be low res? Plus you have a 22" monitor, which means you run it at 1280 x 1024 at least. I wonder why it's so frickin small... And amazingly enough, iTunes doesn't get loaded into your statup. Just because you have a 22" monitor and want to brag about it, doesn't mean you have to waist our time...

Hey, Parrot, don't you have anything better to do than flame? Yesterday I went to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ and clicked the Quicktime Player link. Then I click the link to download Quicktime 6.4 and got the download. The installation was as I described, making no mention of Quicktime, only iTunes, which I'd NEVER heard of. What was I supposed to think, huh? And what am I supposed to think of you? That's not a "rant"? Yes, I've had a lot of trouble in the past with Quicktime and am leary of it. iTuneshelp.exe WAS being loaded at startup but I turned it off (the auto start). I come here to learn and share, not for abuse. See ya.

I just installed it yestereday and I'm in the process of coverting all my cds(50 down 150 to go) to 192 aac, to me it sounds every bit as good as cd's. And much cleaner than mp3. I read that aac does support drm but only if encoded this way like the ones you can purchase and download from itunes music store there is no drm or restrictions on tracks encoded using itunes in aac.

Price for buying music is way to high, if they cut the cost by atleast 30% they would get my buisness. Plus the song/album selection needs to be tripled. Because why pay $10 for an album download restricted by drm. When you can go to bestbuy and get a cd for $10 then use itunes to rip it to 192aac which is a little better than the 128aac they offer, wish they gave an option on download quality.

Hopefully one day this will lead to death of the record labels. So people that actually make the art get a decent percentage of there product.

Show me a website selling music downloads without drm, and I'll show you an unsuccessful business plan.

Is it just me, or does iTunes start up an awful lot of extra processes? AFTER closing iTunes, I had to kill 3-4 processes that it had started and not stopped, one of which was a gearsec.exe (it's the least obvious of them; the others follow an i* naming convention). Then I powered up msconfig and it wanted to start up quicktime on startup, which I keep telling the damn thing to NOT do, and that was in addition to having 'iTunesHelper' run upon startup. Blah, I think I'll be reconsidering having this thing installed.
