You won't see that offered anytime soon. When mp3.com started offering streaming mp3 downloads of any CD, as long as you popped it in your drive first, to prove you had it (after proving you owned it, you could listen to it anywhere with an internet connection), the RIAA sued them out of existence, then bought them. And that was just with compressed mp3's!

Actually it boots your PC to the new QuickTime OS which has a Windows emulation mode.

Yeah, like WinAmp and every other music player doesn't load some crap into the system tray on installation. You know if you right click on the icon and go into Quicktime Preferences, you can uncheck the box for "Quicktime system tray icon" and it no longer loads at startup. I checked my task manager and confirmed qttask.exe didn't load. So problem solved. It is annoying to be have it do that automatically, but at least there is an option to shut it off easily without having to resort to msconfig (there are FAR too many windows programs that force you to go that route to disable their startup). Even with all the extra services loaded, iTunes still isn't the resource hog MusicMatch is. What I really like best about iTunes is that it has really nice file management features. You can scan though a large library pretty fast (mine is around 2000 songs, most ripped from my own CDs). Sorting the songs goes pretty quickly, too. I really like being able to play the tracks straight from my library without having to first create a playlist. Sometimes I just want to put my whole collection on "sort" if I'm on my PC for a while working on something, and iTunes lets you do it. It also went though and sorted all of my MP3s according to the id3 tags and renamed the files in a format that works really well with my RIO Volt (track number and song title).

The biggest gripe is that iTunes has issues with Norton Firewall (you can't access the Music Store with it enabled). That is something you'd figure they'd catch in beta testing. Also, from what I've read in the iTunes support forums at Apple, on some PCs ripping to MP3 is a LOT slower than MusicMatch. Some people were getting rips that took 2 minutes per song. Everyone I've seen so far that has had this issue has had a P4, but my Athlon XP seems to get pretty good rip speeds (10-12X at 192 kbps), so teh issues seem to vary from machine to machine. One theory is that iTunes doesn't yet suppost SSE2, so the P4's longer execution pipeline is choking on the encoding since it can't use the "shortcuts" built into SSE2. Pentium-M's also seem to get pretty good rip speeds as well, so the software seems to favor processors with shorter pipelines, based on the little bit of data I've been able to glean from their forums. We really need to set up a thread in the Software forum and have people post their hardware and iTunes rip speeds (it will vary somewhat from CD to CD, but the afflicted people over in the Apple forums were taking 15 minutes to rip an entire CD whereas I was clocking in around 4 minutes per CD on the same encoding settings).

Cool, thanks. That is about what I got. I had only heard from Intel users and was curious what other AMD users were getting. Are you using SDRAM or DDR?

Yeah, it lets iTunes access the web, but if the Norton Firewall is enabled, you get an "out of memory error" (which has to win the award for this year's worst error message for by just being vague but also totally incorrect at the same time - "Bad programmer. No doughnuts!" would have actually been more helpful for diagnosing the problem) when you try to access the iTunes Music Store. From the Apple forums, it seems to be a VERY widespread problem. The only fix Apple has put up so far is to disable the firewall, which is not a real fix because it leaves your computer sitting naked if you are without a hardware firewall. (Plus, I like having a software firewall to not just protect me from what is trying to get IN to my computer, but also to save me from what might be trying to get OUT). You'd figure they would have gotten their heads together with Symantec to figure this bug out before the final release. I like the software a lot, but this seems like a BIG oversight to me.

I was hooked on itunes for a few days, but the total lack of customization and the overall waste of space kinda got on my nerves...not to mention the fact that it hardly collapses nicely and doesn't work with multimedia keyboard buttons. Anyway, now I'm using the Winamp 5 beta, and its got everything. The pay version is supposed to have encoding and burning if thats your thing, everything a normal player has is included in the free one. Its a ways off anyway, its still early beta, but definitely worth checking out.

I also hate the lack of collapsability. However, it worked great with my MS Multimedia Keyboard buttons...?

And of course, BOTOH, since it doesn't 'feel' like we are walking into a store and physically stealing a CD, or that their is a COP over our shoulders when on Kazaa, it feels like its OK; or something that isn't a big deal. So sure, I'm a hypocrite when I say it's stealing, and yet I do it anyway. But its sooo easy, and quick, and painless it just doesn't feel totally wrong.

And if using Kazaa standard, of course you will get all the Spyware/Adware crap that takes over your PC. Just use Kazaa Lite or K++ and you will avoid all of that, and you will get the RIAA IP Blocking features. Thats what I do when I'm braking the law...........

Okay I'll bite.

Before someone tries to read black and white arguments into our society that is not so black and white people should review a few things.

1. History is full of moments where a band or large group of people "broke" the law to fight something that was not fair. Where would the US be if those long ago had remained loyal to Britain? What about a number of the demonstrations that have occurred over the past 40 years?

2. Laws are made by the people in the US for the most part. It takes politicians that Joe Blow hates to interpret what's best for the people in the big picture but in the end the laws are set as such. It's not always perfect but that's when the people make it known and changes may occur. Sometimes it takes something drastic and sacrifices are made for this to happen. As long as those people doing just that understand the consequences, let them make that decision.

3. There are not much in the way of laws governing how businesses price items to benefit the consumer and yet still allow the business to flourish. In some countries I'd imagine that the current practice of how the music and even the rest of the entertainment industry does things here in the states would be illegal in those countries.

This perceived crime is really a grey area when you're talking about the vast number of people that are committing this so-called crime and many of they're reasoning for it. And frankly this isn't anything really new but the music industry wants you to believe it is as for years people have been copying cd's, tapes, and albums for friends, relatives and co-workers. Prices have for the most part went up or have stayed the same over the last twenty years and that combined with it now being more convenient like you mentioned have given people an angle to truly fight back.

Frankly I think we will likely find in the next 5 years the music industry finally accepting it needs to change it's model and release some control. It'll be a slow change that only a few will notice but it's going to be with the help of Apple and others making purchasing appear both reasonable and convenient for it to happen. I believe the music industry is the worst of them all. Look at how dvd prices have fallen for both dvd's and hardware. How can the music industry explain why music cd's cost close to what a movie dvd costs during these times? The movie industry isn't perfect by any means but they're certainly held with greater respect than the music side of things just by the fact that dvd's typically deliver greater value for the dollar.

In the end certain people will always try to get what they can for free even if it's illegal and there's a good chance of not getting caught. The industries need to take advantage of as much of that as they can by first just making it somewhat difficult to do but not impossible(costs too much $$$ and ticks off legit users), second, add more value to what consumers are paying for(allowing consumers to buy by the song is a great first step if the price is right), and third, try to consider the marketing opportunity out of it. I've known lots of folks who went out and bought cd's after they heard the pirated material. One other thing is they have to maintain accurate surveys of how many are really pirating. Percetages is the only way to do it rather than throwing out numbers that might be in the thousands or millions to make it sound oh so horrible(hmm...who's taking advantage of convenience now?).

Okay so I'll end my rant now and step down off soapbox after this. The world just ain't black and white and I don't condone cheating anyone but the argument can be made that these businesses may very well be cheating consumers. The problem is that no laws are in place to really deal with it. With that in mind we really don't want those laws to happen in the extreme sense either as then it kills business but something needs to happen to force business models to change with people. I'm optimistic that it will but yes some will get in deep deep trouble while some businesses go under. There will be losses on both sides. People and these businesses are going to have to accept that if they really want to right the ship. People want their music and businesses want their money. It'll work out.

Winamp 5 beta 1

I definitely agree that it takes up a LOT of real estate on screen. If you are running a single monitor, it can be a real deal-killer (luckily I've got a crappy little 15" a friend gave me for free hooked up to my card's second video out). I've only had a little trouble with getting it to work with my Logitech Cordless Elite keyboard. The volume control wheel and the track advance buttons seem to work just fine (provided iTunes is the active app), but the Play button wants to always launch MusicMatch. Hopefully either Logitech or Apple will get this worked out pretty soon.

I've been plaing around with the sharing feature the past few days. It is really good for my wife and I because it lets her listen to the 2000+ songs I've ripped to my hard drive without wasting any of the drive space on her laptop (or having to rip the CDs twice). It'll really be great in a year or two when I can put together a HTPC for the living room, and then use the sharing feature to pump the tunes into my home threater system. I just have to wait for the Shuttle nForce 2 SPP boxes to get nice and cheap and move the guts of my current PC into one of those when I upgrade to an A64 in a year or two.

Downloaded iTunes. Tried it for 15 to 20 Minutes.

Going back to Musicmatch/Winamp combination.

I use Winamp as a great, small player. Musicmatch is my tool of choice for ripping and organizing. I registered 7.5 to use supertagging and rip fast.

iTunes may be a "killer app" on the Apple side of the fence, but they don't have Musicmatch and Winamp (and a thousand others) to choose from. If I had an ipod, I'd use it for that, but I have a Nomad Zen. I have to use Creative's crappy software (or pay to get Notmad explorer... gotta get around to that )

So, my verdict is that iTunes is great for those with limited choces, but in the PC world, there ARE better options.

After installing it on a few works machines to test it out, I installed it on my primary box tonight. I have to say I'm really liking it. Once I ran a proggie to build the ID3 tags off the file names, I now have a perfectly organized, easily searchable, intelligent-playlisted music collection. Sure, I went through and disabled the iPod service it started, and I killed the Quicktime tray icon, etc... but it was worth it. Sounds good, good UI, and I love the volume standardization feature.

so you did the consolidate feature? i want it to try getting id tags for some of my stuff, i just don't want it moving my files around

btw, 4.1.1 is out, fixes the norton internet firewall bug and stuff.

Actually, I didn't use consolidate. I like one massive folder, because then once I get it iTunes I can just create playlists. Easier to move and find stuff when not in iTunes as well. I used TagScanner, an apparently freeware program to convert the ID3 tags to the filenames for a uniform appearance.

Is anyone else having problems with the gearsec.exe cd burning service that itunes installs? It makes my shutdown time take about 30 seconds instead of 3. If I disable the service, the shutdown/reboot time is back to normal, but itunes bitches about gearsec being shutdown everytime I start it up.

Some dvdxcopy users that like gear too
